Alternator light

Hi all. Just got back from an amazing billing show but after taking my tdci around the off road course the alternator light has come on and stayed on all the way back to Cardiff. Anything to worry about or should I just give it a blast with a pressure washer and let it dry. Had no problem with the drive home other than the light being on, apparently a bit of black insulating tape over the light can fix this problem.

I saw on a Facebook group someone did the course and their alternator packed up - the consensus seemed to be that they really don't like mud! Not sure a pressure washer would help - it might force more gunge into the alternator?

I have seen somewhere that some hot water allow to dry followed by some wd40 should make it a little happier

If that light is on I would be at the battery and alternator connections with cleaner, and a voltmeter to make sure it's actually charging.

The light being on usuallly means it's not...and if you've been wading around in the muck odds are you've messed up the brushes/slip rings in your alternator.

Do not spray WD40 into an alternator - it won't do it any good. if it is not charging your best bet is disassembly and cleaning..

Alternators do not like muddy water neither do starters. Soon as it gets in it grinds away their innards.

Get a voltmeter and check your charging properly, should read 14.4v when running
