Folks,
A small problem with my alternator from my D90 300tdi. After removing, cleaning and replacing my intercooler I noticed a clicking sound coming from the around the alternator/water pump area of the fan belt. It seemed that I might have damaged some of the fan splines on the alternator getting the intercooler out. I carefully bent them back but the clicking persisted. After removing the fan belt as someone suggested it might be the water pump going but spinning that by hand there is no clicking. The alternator still clicks so I removed it thinking I had bent it's fan out of shape. On removal the alternator fan seems okay - running free and not catching. There is a slight clicking coming from inside the alternator which I presume would be amplified when spinning at working speed and attached to the vehicle.
Any ideas what that could be and how I can cure it? I haven't had any charging problems and it looks generally in good nick.
Thanks for any advice.
