Hi All,

Over the past few days now, I've been google'ing and searching around for info on the possibility of running a 240V system off the Landy.

My workshop/shed where most of my work in undertaken is across a busy main A road and it has no power. I've tried the council route to get power from the house put over there but it's a no go!

I used to have a small Geny over there but they kept packing up as it's not often I need one, but when I do, I hit it hard.

I have recently bought a Welder as I had a few bits and bobs to do and this lives in the shed. So i have to cart it, then the trolley, then the gas over the road to the house (after waiting for a dry day) to use it which is far from ideal. I also have a small compressor which I used to run off the geny very well, but again, as I've not re-sourced another geny, it's had to be carted about everywhere.

What I'm wondering is ... is there any way to run a modified alternator or generator off my Defender (89 Def 90, 300TDI) to power these?

The compressor is the lighter load, but I fully understand the implications of running the welder.

I've rulled out inverters due to cost of the items itself, plus it'd just wipe batteries out in seconds unless they were the pricy deep cycle jobs!

I'm almost at the point where I just dont think it's do'able ... but thought I'd ask those in the know before I decide it's not do'able (and without breaking the bank!).

The welder is a Clarke 160EN IIRC and the Compressor an old Wolf Pro something or other ... no overly big, 50 ltr and just enough CFM to run a semi-decent HVLP spray gun and impact wrench etc!

Thanks in advance

I would think another geny off ebay would be your cheapest option. Last genny I had I saw some builders chuck it in a skip because it wouldn't start, turned out the engine oil level was low which had activated the cut out switch.

Might be an idea to invest in a bigger genny, work out what you need power wise for your most power hungry item then get a genny that makes more than that, a large industrial unit might be good. Not a huge lorry one but a trailered one, or something?
