Wierd as hell.

Got back to my car, put the key in, got the message :

'ALTERNATOR FAULT', and hardly able to turn the steering wheel.

Drove for a mile, steering wheel really stiff, 'Battery symbol' warning light showing.

Any idea what the problem could be? Handbook just says ..."Seek professional assistance"

Immobilised and desperate!

Cheers,

D.J.

sounds like the belt might have come off, because the alternator belt will probably also drive the power steering pump thus making the steering stiff. worth a look before you get the dealer to look as they charge around £60 an hour

Graham,

- you're bang on the money, well done!

Opened the bonnet, belt all over the place. But how to get it back on? Its a really fiddly little job. Any tricks/tips available?

In fact is there a web-site where you can find the manuals to advise how to do it?

Cheers,

D.J.

- I've called direct line rescue to come out and do it. Much easier!

Cheers again, Graham, for your timely, acurate advise.

I just replaced the alternator belt on my Disco with a shiny new one as the old one was squeeking all the time.

Took 10 minutes and I only needed a 15mm spanner.

'Rescue' guy shows up. Turns out I need a new water pump. First repair I've needed. I'm not crying too much. I'll put a new belt on anyway at the same time.

Want to be back on the road asap so that I can run over a few of these anti-4x4 lobbyists!

Cheers,

D.J.
