so, fitted turbo-first job on Landy, so chuffed but..........
when reconnecting hoses/pipes etc, metal pipe from low side of intercooler to turbo got a little too close to alternator blades making a hell of a racket when starting up:eek:! yesterday, car did approx 30 miles after this with no problems but after idling for 15mins this evening, i go out and battery dash light is on. little damage can be seen to alternator and it spins fine. so, how fragile are alternators to this kind of thing and am i likely i need a new one?

Sounds like the vibration has either made a wire fall off the back, or disloged the brushes (that are probably well worn) so that they are not in contact with the commutator!

Try tw@tting it with a big bar to see if light goes out again.

first check the wiring at the back of the alternator, if thats ok and it turns freely and is not rough(bearing's not ffed then)
I would check the voltage at the battery with a multimeter, Slap everything electrical on and rev it a bit and see what the voltage is the manuals tell you 13.6 v to 14.4 v I recently had my alternator showing just over 13.6 volts think it was 13.8 but the warning light still glowed dimly, turned out to be a faulty phase and required new diodes, so i binned the bugger and bought a quality alternator and new pulley for about £130 quid (mines is the 300tdi)
