altenator light freelander td4

i have a alttenator light problem over the last 12 months on my 2002 td4
when i start up drive off ,2 miles light comes on sometimes for a few secs other times 2 minite then it might not happen for several weeks.
altenator checked at garage all ok .
the only time it does come on is every time i fill up with desil and then again as above it might not come on untill i fill up again.
starting ,running, power and battery all ok.
can someone help me please

Hello, I have a similar problem on a 2002 TD4! I have investigated mine and have found that if I hit the instrument panel or the fuse box cover I can make the battery charge lamp flash! The bad news is that I haven't found the problem. I believe the reason for the intermittent flashing lamp is due to a connection problem with the live feed to the alternator. This comes from fuse 19 in the fuse box below the steering column. I have tried moving wires, checked fuse but I cannot reproduce the problem. The lamp seems to flicker as a result of a certain vibration frequency, which only seems to occur when I thump the fascia area with the side of my fist! It will occur whilst driving, especially when traveling over rough surfaces on the road. It usually starts at night when alternator is loaded more, and in time with road irregularities e.g. cats eyes.
I have learned to live with the problem and I am hoping that it may get worse so as to make fault easier to find! Hope this helps! (at least I know I am not the only one with this problem!)

hi thanks the only difference with your fault and mine the light does not flicker it stays on for a couple of secs or for a couple of minutes but there is no set pattern and again i can go for a week or two and is des not happen and it does not happen over rough ground or potholes .any other ideas?

Hello again, I think your problem will be more difficult to find if you cannot reproduce it in some way. Have you tried to find an intermittent connection on any of the components in the circuit? There are connections on the fuse box, engine control module in the box behind the battery, indicator lamp in the instrument module and possibly the connections at the alternator. One way to narrow your search is to check to see if the alternator has stopped charging when the light comes on (do headlights go dim?). If not, it could just be the circuit to the indicator lamp, or the lamp itself (although on mine the indicators are LED's). Finally, the fault could still be in the alternator itself, as an intermittent fault, by its nature, will not necessarily be apparent during testing. Hope this helps and best of luck.
