P38A Alpine stereo

I am a bit puzzled, I fitted an Alpine head yesterday( original) and all was ok, everything worked , I got a FM transmitter today so i thought i will try it out, anyway I turned engine on then the radio, it was on R2, so following the instructions for the FM thing I went to tune a station in to Frequency xyz but none of the buttons would respond, it was still on Radio 2 and playing, I could not turn the volume up/down, none of the controls worked, , so engine off, pulled fuse then put fuse back in thinking it would reset the stereo, but now its dead.. anyone any thoughts/ideas?

Name change to killerradio maybe ? (sorry just had to)

Have you checked over the internal components. I had a issue like that and turns out the bottom half of the motherboard was a bit corroded. So i gave it a clean with some alcohol and its worked fine ever since.

Looks like you may be on to something, went out this morning to remove the HU and thought i would try it anyway, ignition on . radio on and it asked for code, code in and it came alive , I managed to change channels at first then got " no magazine" error ( the CD button was not pressed), then it stuck on R2 again, I put my hand on the wires/connectors at the back off the unit and it worked again so will check all wiring and motherboard whilst I have the HU out, hopefully something obvious and easy to rectify.
PS I do have the CD changer in the boot but the magazine is missing

What number CD changer is it, I might have a spare mag in the garage ?...

I cant see a number on it, I will have to remove it to check

I believe it is XQE100240

Glad to see your getting somewhere with because those alpine units can get expensive. sometimes Its that long board at the back that connects the power and sound connectors to the radio its self. Sometimes it can come loose or the little connector on the bottom can crack over time.

I will check it out once I have It out, but that seems a plausible cause of the syptoms it has been showing rather than a dodgy wire

Someone been playing with the loom? Why would it ask for code unless switched live and permanent live were reversed? Or it lost power?

I pulled the fuse last night to check it after it seemed dead, when I checked it this morning it was powered and asking for code

After looking closely at the motherboard and wiring I could find nothing, so plugged it back in loosely, it powered up and asked for code, I then put my hand on the connectors at the back and gave them a wiggle, still powered, put my finger on the fuse and wiggled, No power, HU back out and looked at the fuse/holder, all seemed fine. I though I would replace the fuse on the off chance it was somehow dodgy and then repeated what I had done previously and it stayed powered up! I am still not sure why ? Dodgy fuse perhaps? but all seems ok .. for now at least.

Mind games. They do that.

I cannot drive along now without listening to every creak wondering if anything is going to blow.

If it's a glass bodied fuse, the wire breaks where it's attached to the cap causing an intermittent connection.

It was a blade fuse
