Just in case anybody has been looking at the new Alpine that has a built in phone holder, that was launched last week, as an alternative to the pricey single din 7” screen affairs, I pulled the trigger and installed this morning and fits pretty well in 300 tdi dash, see pics.
its almost like it was designed for the defender dash!
The adaptor that comes with it plugged straight into the two cables that the 10 year old aftermarket clarion,
but needed stuffing into the hole towards the fuse box to fit
it is about 1-2mm too long, but with a gentle squeeze it fitted, but you could
move / remove the heatsink as there is a lot of ventilation in a defender!
the mic you can see comes with it and have fed out of dash and clipped at top of a-pillar trim (its meant for sun visor but defender one is too thick) but works great there when parked... Next I will install a cam that plugs into reverse light and install it on top where a top brake light is installed. Its great value and has a detachable plate, and for what you save on the screen version you can have a desicated mid range smart phone / phablet that is upgradable and removable for off roadi ng, which the built in ones are not.
