Now i've read all the threads on this...BUT...i have a 1987 90 with drums on the rear, what alloys can i buy (names please) that will fit?

There seems to be a lot of discussion as to whether Boosts will fit or not, some say they will, others disagree but nobody has come with a definite brand that will fit...so help, I'm in the UK next week and definitely want to order some, problem is i wont have the landy with me so i'd better get this right...postage to denmark is huge but i cant seem to get any here.

If there any alloys from a disco that will fit can someone tell me the year and model so i know what to look for..

Thanks...Mark

I dont know about alloys that fit old defenders, but if your realy want a set it is possible to fit an axel with disk brakes; might even be possible to just change the hub assembily but im not certian. Then any of them will fit.:D

Personaly i sware by black wheels, and like the smart but rugged look of steel modulars with aggressive mud tyres, not to mesnion that there cheap and wont chip or shatter if you have an argument with a rock.

I am somebody who owns a Landrover for what it does NOT what it looks like or says about me as a person. I am due a new set of tyres soon.

Can anyone say that there is any benefit to fitting alloys over my current steels?

(Sorry if this is a thread stealer)

If you use your landy for what it was intended for then alloys are a liability. You will damage them and you will be stuffed. Steel wheels are the only real solution. Alloys are just for looks.

well it is a bit....i'm just looking for advice as this forum usually is excellent, in denmark the land rover scene is limited...we're only 5 million and they and their military use mercedes as the chosen 4x4...

I travel 45 miles each way to work through forests and b roads, i find a landy is excellent in ice, snow and temperatures down to minus 20...

Now I dont see the harm in my landy looking good as well as doing the job it was built for, nobody says its a strictly offroad vehicle..as far as i'm concerned i want reliability and strength in conditions which are unlike the uk...in the summer i take the top off and i want some alloys so i can enjoy the vehicle all year round...

I am of the opinion that a landy is a very personal and fun thing to own...it does different things for different people around the globe..and can be a truck, a car, a bus, a convertible or a tractor..I wave to them all regardless of whether they have alloys, a snorkel or a stuffed animal stapled to the front grill..

Now as a senior member i would have thought you'd respect everyones landy for what the owner wants it to be...

Now, can anyone help me with my original question please?

I'm sorry for the rant but i usually get really good help and advice here and not looked upon as a prat who just wants to pimp his ride...

There is a benefit from alloys - if they are good ones. Unsprung weight.

It's a common misconception that your springs and dampers are designed to hold a car UP. Actually they are designed to allow the wheel to lift over an incompressible object, in a controlled fashion, and to press the wheel back DOWN again, as quickly as possible, but in a similarly controlled way.

The heavier that the suspension components are, the harder that is to design. More inertia.

Given that the wheels are right out on the end of, admittedly, very heavy axles, a weight saving there gives a huge difference in response times, because here you come up against 'Moment of inertia' Simply put, weight times distance from the pivot point. Say half the width of track.

Ideally, all of the suspension would weigh nothing and have infinite travel: you'd have the perfect F1, track, road and off-road vehicle.

That said, an alloy wheel is hugely more susceptible to fatal damage. Bend a steel rim and you can heat it and beat it out. Doing that to an alloy would be tempting fate.

Second problem. Tyres. The heavier the tyre you fit, the less the benefit.

But, again, because the wheel/tyre is out on the end of the axle, the more weight you can save in the tyre is to the good.

Personally, I'd say that I'd have as much respect for a petrolhead with alloys as a swamp and rock dweller with steel. Horses for courses.

If your route is flattish, and you're not going to reduce tyre pressures where the wheel rims are at risk, I'd go for alloys. Less weight = less mpg.

having tried to change mine, they are a hell of a lot lighter an all, but its the damage risk that has put me off them.

And to give you some idea, while the above is absolutely correct, me and a bloke similar size (not all that small) physiclly can't lift a LR front axle. You need three to lift it to any level, and then it aint easy.

I have boosts on my 1990 90 and don't think much changed between 87 and 90. Can't stand em, yer right in that landys should be personal but the whole point of them is that they shouldn't be bling whcih alloys are. I will change my alloys for steels when i get the first reasonable opportunity!

ok, but only if they're in good nik and have almost new tryes on em - mine had almost new bfgs on so i got a few miles to go yet before it's worth it!

Do you have discs or drums on the rear axle?

yeah, drums on the back, and cheers Ian, got PM and will consider it! Me BFGs are really nearly new so i don't want to have ter fork out for any more anytime soon though.

Please dont feel I was being critical. I was merely giving you my opnion. I find that I have a chip on my shoulder as I am often criticised for having an ifor williams canopy on my truck cab. Again....looks crap but does the job!

You go for alloys by all means....as I said in the original post (SORRY TO BE THREAD STEALER!!!)

Enjoy your landy..alloys and all!

IMO alloys belong on a sports car.:p
