Just sticking me nose in to say 'allo.

I've been posting queries on the RRR forum, but it's nowhere near as well populated as in here ... so here I am.

After 30yrs in the Mob, last thing I wanted was a Land Rover, but I've bin tempted by an '85 RRC 4 door that had been hiding in a garage for ten years. Only 39k on the clock, and never had a towbar fitted.

Looks good superficially ... seems solid and passed MoT with no comments, but there's a lot of surface rust to treat underneath. Haven't got access to a lift or a garage, so I'm not looking forward to spending all that time on me back out in the road ... but needs must ...!!!

Last W/end I took it for a 420 mile round trip, much of it on motorways. I am now officially 'in love' ... any one wanna buy a Mk2 Jag? I've no further use for it.

PS: If you think a Rover v8 is thirsty, try running an old Jag.

:welcome2:

Good choice , we have two rrc a 4 door and a 2 door.
Old engine oil and bitumen paint mixed up and sprayed underneath is what I do to our two rrc
:)

'allo Spencer.

I got 3lt of NeutraRust, 5lt of silver Hammerite, and 10 lt of Bitumin paint.
It's the 'on me back' bit I'm not lookin' forward to ... an' it rains a lot 'ere in Wales.

Had the back bumper off yesterday, to fit a tow bracket. Rear chassis member nice and sound, but lots of surface rust. Treated with NeutraRust, but I'll have to re-visit it again with the other gunks.

Hi,
Would not bother with trying rust treatments or trying to get to bare metal, what works for me is a jet wash and a week of drying off ,which means driving as usual and then mix waste oil and bitumen paint and spray with a air driven shutz gun.
I do his every year in the summer.
Very messy but better than welding every year :D
:)

Welcome! I'm not surprised that your '85 has no more than surface rust,I had one first reg'd in Oct '85 (one of the first Efi's) & despite a starship mileage, 15 previous owners & evidence of considerable off-road use there was no actual rot in the structure. There is a theory that the steel quality used by LR declined (not for the first time either - remember the mid seventies series 3's?) from the introduction of the Discovery in '89 & that this change also effected the RR production line.

Hi Norseman,

Essex Boy eh? I got dragged up in Romford.

This one's first Reg in Sept '85. Probably one of the last Pre-EFI ones.
A big plus point in my book. I 'm old school ... I understand Carburetters.

I understand fuel injection in theory, but not in practice, and I am much happier if there are no engine management CPUs around to complicate things.

Shoot, this ol' bus doesn't have electric windows or mirrors either.
I like this. I could happily live without the central locking too,
but seeing as it is there, I've managed to get it working ... sort of.

It would be nice to find a few wrecks in a local farmers field, but so far only old S2 Landies laying around here. They're not posh enough round here to run Rangies, but I'm keeping me eyes peeled.

Born & raised in the Hertfordshire countryside Johnny, moved to Essex when I was 19 & still never lived in a town. Nice to see you also believe in the 'keep it simple' approach which given LR's unenviable reputation for electrical reliability is probably the best bet! My current steed is a low mileage/two owner '87 Vogue auto which, to me anyway, ticks all the right boxes & covers no more than 2k a year as I've also the use of a modern car.

That made me smile ... my 'other car' is a '69 Jag 380 (upgunned Mk2). So the mpg of a Rangie don't frighten me. Weekly shopping trips are a 30+ mile round trip, but although the wife has a shopping trolley (Corsa), we very rarely use it.

Come to think of it, since the Rangie arrived, I ain't used the Jag either. Any one wanna buy it?

Johnny.
