All terrain tyres?!

Hey guys,

I have a 200tdi defender 90 hard top and currently he sits on two insa turbo special tracks on the front and two grizzly claws on the back, both mud terrain tyres....

However I drive 55 miles daily in the defender 7 days a week and have clocked up 10,000 miles in the 6months I've owned it it has come to the time to change the tyres.

I'm interested in what all terrain tyres people on here rate and don't rate as I've been waiting for 6 weeks to get bf Goodrich at's but they are unavailabe and appear to be for yet another 8 weeks

I want something a bit meaty as I love the look of mud terrains but a bit more on road drivability

I don't rate BFG's running Maxxis now and they're much better

I'm running with Cooper ST Maxx and am very happy with them. They have a fairly aggressive tread pattern and dig in well when they need to yet are nice and quiet when on the road.

You can run with Maxxis, or with Cooper ST Maxx, or you can just fit the BFG AT and be done with it.

Wait the 8 weeks if you can, then fit the BFG All Terrains.
Sure they may cost a "pretty penny" but you will be a long time trying to wear them out.

As a note, I have a set of Cooper SST for play, and my daily tyres are BFG AT.
They are as good now after some thing like 25,000 miles as the day they were put on.

They're quiet on the road and very grippy, even in snow!

I think they look lovely too...

I've got bfg at's on my 110 dc. Not up there with road tyres but like you i like something more aggresive. I can recommend genral grabber at2's, had them on my last disco and even managed 60,000 miles of hard driving on them before i killed them

Thanks guys, according to my mechanic friend apparently bfg are not going to produce the at in the same tread pattern due to some eu law the reliability of this I am unsure,

I will look into the maxxis and the coopers thanks again

Just gave the defender it's 3 monthly service he's running like a dream again

I second this.

very quiet on the road, superb in the snow

BUT

Do not take them into sloppy mud unless you are prepared to be towed out because in those conditions all they do is slip ... like, all the time!

at a pay and play day i got stuck 6 times, most of which in very silly places you wouldn't expect to get stuck in, and a friend in a pajero with BFG muds didn't get stuck once and he went in many more challenging areas than me. I was very disappointed with them that day as they had proven very good until then.

Thats not to say of course that they are a bad tyre ... because they are not! They perform excellently everywhere else i have driven them.

But for that little reason I'm considering buying some mud terrains next.

Had BFG A/T before, they were fantastic, but wanted better looking more aggressive tyres, so went for Cooper Discoverer STT's, they're very good, but they've worn down quick compared to the BFG's

If you want to save yourself some cash look at the Enduro Runway AT tyres. Have nothing but good things to say about these tyres. Have got me through seriously thick mud that BFG muds have struggled with. Have done some serious offroading with mine and have never managed to get them stuck once. Behave very well on road too and are nice and quiet.

I have BFG A/Ts done 40,000 miles with prob another 30,000 miles left on them. I have had no problems with them.

Can't get BF muds here in France either And nobody seems to know why

I have a set of Cooper ST's for the road that are brill so 2nd choice for me looks like it will be a set of STT's !
