Requesting help getting Disco home, just 1 mile away from where its sitting on public highway, and any advice about how to repair.

Front Prop snapped on Discovery 2

In return for help I am willing to make available the use of a braked a frame to local landyzone folks when needed, and I will write a tutorial about how the problem thats happpened below is fixed, using what parts, photos, etc, and a phone number to talk any others through.

Can't get the bolts undone that attach it to front diff - sockets/ spanners dont sit flush.

Means Can't tow, because shaft flaps around hitting floor and chassis rail.

For some unknown reason, despite rear prop intact, can not drive vehicle at all.

Was trying to remove shaft, then tow the Disco on a braked a frame, using a Defender Ive bought to use until Discovery is fixed. Will sell the defender after Disco back on the road.

Not going to plan.

Anyone local who can help either get the shaft off so I can tow, or help in some way get it less than 1 mile home? Prob best not drag it as it is as despite snapping at only 20mph, already dented chassis rail and floor quite aggressiveely.

I'll also be looking for advice on how to repair/ what bits I need to buy as this is the first time I have ever needed to touch this area of the Disco so do not know what I'm dealing with.

Just need to get the Disco less than 1 mile to where I stay, also in Airdrie.

Shane

Prop nuts are 9/16 and you can usually get a 3/8 drive socket on with a small extension or a ring spanner a 1/4 turn at a time.

Prop nut removal tool is nice but not strictly necessary, just a bit fiddly without.

It should drive in different lock (if you have it)

Assuming it's a u/j that's let go you'll be able to replace them so long as the yokes are undamaged. If they're damaged you'll need to replace the whole shaft

Hi BB thanks for the info. I was trying 15mm socket and ring spanner and just isn't enough room for it to sit flush with bolt head.

No difflock on mine.

I don't know the name of it, but the bit the shaft goes into furthest away from front axle has been ripped apart so now has a hole, as well as UV snapped in half.

It is a little tricky as you can't quite get square but a 9/16s socket with an extension bar should tap on.

No diff lock means you'll need a tow when you have the prop off.

Once its off won't be a problem as I have a braked a frame, and a defender to use as tow vehicle.

Thanks I'll try tapping it on. No idea how to rotate prop so can reach the top 2 bolt heads though?

This morning at 6am lying on road with torch in mouth, soakin wet, with wrong tools like a complete wolly.

Wet roads are always fun under a Landy :)

Roll the vehicle forwards a little to rotate the prop or jack up a wheel and rotate the diff drive flange

You can use a 14 mm Socket or spanner on them little nuts! Just up on corner and the shaft will turn as you rotate the raised wheel!use an axle stand as well please!

I'm 6 miles away but only just saw this thread.
@blue beasty is there a problem with the new forum?
Always check the 'New Threads' when I return home but didn't see this last night.
Could have assisted last night but busy today I'm afraid.

I was going to contact you but was waiting to hear whether assistance was needed.

Heard this morning that he's been recovered home and thinks he may have transfer box problems.

It was more that the thread didn't show up as a new one that I hadn't seen.
Always sit and check before retiring for the night :)
But good to know a happy ending was achieved - (Till the next time its a Discovery after all)

Yes, fit new u/j's. They're cheap and easy to do. Also, while you are under your car check out the rear u/j's. Any play in them is too much. If they're ok, squirt some grease into them.

Thanks for the advice, found play in rear one. Strange thing is shafts look a year old only. Nevertheless new uj all round
Thanks for the advice

Anyone got a front disco 2 shaft for sale?

I'm in airdrie , Lanarkshire, sort of around Glasgow/ Edinburgh, in this place called Scotland, UK.

Just looking to bolt it on after putting in new uj's

I'm assuming all shafts have circlips to replace uj...
