aircon compressor clicking

There was thread in here about this but I can't find it. My compressor's started clicking on and off and on and off and on and off - belt slippage? low gas? whaddya think?

too much gas or non condensables in the system, either that or ur pressure switch is fooked!

I had the same thing with my A/C compressor, turned-out to be the compressor clutch was slipping, had it refurbed, it's like sitting in a fridge now, but you need it when it's 45c+ outside

What did you have refurbed? Just the clutch? How is that done, any pointers? I've only got 35C but 98% humidity. Without the ac that soggy patch on the floor ain't the matrix o'rings, its me!

I believe there are shims that you can remove to adjust the clutch for wear.

Just to close this out (sorry forgot to do so sooner) it was a problem with the fusebox harness. go figure. so it works but seems to be very very slowly losing refrigerant. mech figures its a tiny leak in the evaporator. says its a nightmare to get to and expensive to boot. i told him to fill 'er up and i'll run her as long as i can. winter coming, won't need the ac for a few months and can sort it in spring.

The trouble with leaving it is something else will go, e.g. the condenser if it doesn't get it's oily gas circulating or the pump seizing.

yeah i know but i'm not planning on running it much for the next couple of months so fingers crossed.

At the top of the compressor towards the rear is a thermal cut out which sometimes gives the symptoms you are getting. To check this out, link the two wires from the cut out together. This cut out is just a switch in series with the clutch coil supply.
The compressors fitted to the P38 are one of the few made by Sanden that have this feature and the problem is that they can break down after time. I have linked mine out for over 7 years without problems. The system has a high pressure cut out switch to protect it and it's worth noting that the high pressure produced by the compressor equals heat.

They just refurbed the clutch bearings/shims, cost me about 60 quid, but the cost of labour here is 'Peanuts' compared to UK
