Air suspension

Hi all,

I'm also having problems with the air suspension. It started when I left the car in to change all the tyres, and the garage did not know they should lock the system (hatchback open and warning blinkers) before jacking up the car. The guy tried to lift both back wheels at the same time and now it takes sometimes about 5 mins to lift to the normal operating height.
Nearly every morning it is on the bump stops, some mornings it has not dropped at all. The compressor is working nearly all the time.
Can what the garage did have split the airbags?
If I need new airbags, I'd be grateful for any tips where to buy from,

Jack the car up under the chassis one corner at a time and look at the airbags, when they are extended you can see the area that fails. It should be pretty obvious if they are shot. If you are going to replace them it's worth doing front and rear while you have your hands dirty as they will all be in a similar state. MAKE SURE YOU USE AXLE STANDS TO SUPPORT THE CHASSIS BEFORE YOU GET UNDERNEATH.
Going on mine, if yours is more than 8 years old, the airbags will be shot. I reckon that like cam belts they need changing at 6 years or 60,000 miles for security

For what it's worth, I used Arnott Gen2 (from Ebay/P38 Spares) because they were not much more expensive than OEM and they have a lifetime warranty for what it's worth. There is a small but noticable improvement in the ride which could just be due to the fact that the rubber on the old bags had hardened.

Good info given so far.

If you want the standard air bags you cant go wrong if you look at Island4x4, they are on ebay or you can buy direct. They are also a reliable supplier and are cheap.
I changed mine a year ago and they are Dunlop and are very good. fairly easy to fit but you should buy the spring clip set at the same time.

Rear are easier than the front but may be corroded in place so you may need a little pressure to pop them out. Incidently I used a Kebab Skewer bent at a right angle about 2.5cm from the end. This pulled the top clips out easily.

If you have cracks in your airbags however small then they are due to be replaced.

You may have had the one of the sensors damaged as I did, When I had a rear tyre changed.

Hi All

We have just replaced the air bags on our LSE (have previously done them on my P38) and just bought the dunlop bags no tops or bottoms. The job is a doddle, The full replacement we did on my P38 was not difficult, but just to replace the actual rubber part on the LSE was even easier and does away with the hassle of stuck bolts, no need to disconnect or disturb air lines, etc.

I think we got the iarbags from ebay in the end.

Hi all, just been underneath my 4.0 P38 today and noticed that my front nearside airbag has a slight leak. Does anyone know how bad they need to be before replacement?- she drives and raises and lowers fine. Also do I need to change boths fronts together or just one at a time as the others appear ok?.

At least, change them in pairs unless they are fairly new. When the car is in "High" mode, open the tailgate and have a look at the ends of the airbags for signs of cracking etc. If the bags are sprayed with soapy water, there is a good chance that any leaks will show up.
