Air Suspension won't inflate

Hi guys. My mate has a 1999 4.0 petrol. It won't inflate the suspension on start up. The pump works ok and was checked. A warning light has come on for the alternator but it is generating power and at the same time the tachometer has stopped working. Am wondering if fixing the tacho issue will sort it, as something to do with the ECU?

Thanks for any advice.
 
I'm sure tacho issue won't be helping, as having no engine speed signal could lead ECU's to believe engine isn't running, but tacho issue could also be indicator of wider leccy probs.
 
You say that your air suspension won't inflate but your EAS Pump is working. But after about 10 to 15 minutes of driving around does your suspension come up then. If so your probably only looking at a new pump seal, only cost around £30 and its a DIY job, piece of **** mate.
 
i sorted mine by tapping the round tops 4 i think next to comp. worked for me and are still working a mth latter.
 
check the voltage getting to the battery from the alternator not the voltage at the alternator if there is a drop it will shut down systems starting with the tacho the cable runs from Alt to starter and up wires are known to corrode also terms might need a clean just a thought
 
Guys this is all very helpful - thanks. My mate (Alan) is highly frustrated with this problem - I will get him to try out the suggestions and get some feedback on here. I don't think the pump switches on at all when the vehicle starts but it can be independently powered and does work.

"The Range Rover is year 1999, 4.0 petrol, whenever you start the vehicle there is an alternator fault showing on the dash , yet the alternator is charging at full rate the battery is also charging at 13.6v. All the lights are on for the suspension and it is on the bump stops, the taco is not going but sometimes the taco starts to operate and then the compressor starts to work and the suspension starts to pump itself up to normal height. Whenever the taco stops so does the compressor where is this problem originating from any ideas, i forgot to mention the interior light does not come on when any of the doors are open. Alan"
 
seen it before- last time it was corroded bcem plug therefore bcem thought not charging
You will need EKA code,electrical contact cleaner (DO NOT USE WD40)
You will need to disconnect the battery and clean bcem plugs and earths
 
I agree with Fanatic, corroded connections at the BECM. the alternator charge light is not operated direct from the alternator like a normal car, but from the BECM when it detects the alternator is charging. If the connectors are corroded it will in all probability answer your Tacho and other problems. Check also the earth and supply wires at the BECM.

Your problems probably all stem from your alternator.If your charging voltage is 13.6V,then it is insufficient.It should be in the range of 14.2-14.4 volts.Anything less will cause problems.These P38,s are extremely charging Voltage sensitive.:eek:

I think the alternator pulses drive the tacho. Try fitting a new charge regulator/brush set to alternator.
