Hi, wonder if anyone can help.

My freelander(2000 reg) td4 was misfiring and bouncy! when stationary for a few weeks.

I took it to a garage last wk and had a diagnostic test done on it and the air flow meter problem came up as a fault.

A new air flow meter has since been put on, however when testing it today it doesnt really seem to have done the trick.
It seems to misfire or pull back especially when the car has been driving for a while(warmed up).
It does it for a little bit then goes ok but the problem is still there.
Also it seems a little slower when moving off after stopping but ok after that

Anyone have any ideas what it can be, if it is another electrical fault should this have shown up on that test.

this sounds like an injector fault,
either an injector is suspect or is giving a poor spray pattern, usually noticable on tickover and when pulling away

1st - try injector cleaner, it may take a few tank refills to sort it,, if you are lucky ,
you can confirm its an injector problem by pulling off the plug to each injector inturn while the engine is on tickover ,

do you use injector cleaner on a regular basis ?

Hi, we have used injector cleaner a couple of times, but as per your comments, looks like we need a few tank fulls.
hubby is going to try and price some new injectors up just in case the problem persists,

thanks

I've never used injector cleaner so far (64.000 kms) and a little reluctant to start with it as I've read about clogged fuel filters etc.. What's the risk of getting these problems you think ??

injector cleaner is OK. . . .but if you have a diesel engine thats done say 60,000miles and you pour some in ,then your going to rake all the ****e in the tank [same with petrol but not as bad] the fuel filter will block a bit quicker, so be aware of that ,however if used on a regular basis it will keep your injectors clean. . . . .better still stick a ltr of cheap vedge oil in on fill up [works better than injector cleaner] but will still rake the ****e in the tank. . . . .:)

on sunday 3.2.08 my engine started to run rough on tickover and has lost its crisp acceleration, i went straight to halfords and bought some redex diesel injector cleaner for £15 , after 20 miles the crisp acceleration has returned , but tickover is still lumpy i will let you know if and when it clears,it took the full tank of fuel to clear last time .

td4 injectors are prone to suffering with problems and usually its a build up of deposits causing poor spray pattern,

willo,,,,to replace an injector ,it is an expensive job £150 (exchange) each,
also they are a real bitch to remove, so its is worth putting the cleaner in to keep injectors clean ,
most of my journeys are 5 mile runs and im sure this contributes to carbon build up on the injectors,or maybe low grade supermarket fuel ?
i only started to use the injector cleaner at around 70K,after having a lumpy tickover and lack of power problem, i have never had a problem with the filter blocking

ming ,,i have been using 5% veg oil for several months now but i still have to give it a dose of injector cleaner from time to time

from 80-100,000 miles you could get injector problems [more likely on short run motors] all short run doozles should use jector cleaner on regular basis, if one plays up then bite the bullit and change them all, and yes they can be a bastid to get out ,but bin sum good right ups on hear about this subject ,but sum doozles will do 200.000 un still run well, this is called sods law, also at bout 100,000 miles high pressure pump can let yer down [check pressure] as lower pressure = injector problems. . . . .just a thought :)

ming,,,,bite the bullet,,,,::confused: the thought of spending £600 on injectors would give me severe depression, im a tight bastid when it comes to things like this :D :D :D , i would prefer to try to keep them going as long as i can,

Hi, just an update.
took car back to garage again and another fault appeared
Engine Stabiliser Controller

I rang a landrover place and gave him code number and symptoms and he
said the most likely cause is the injector.
On the older freelanders the clamps crack causing a build up of carbon, if this has happened it will be a mare to get out.

Cost of reconditioned injector £197.00 plus vat or new £300!!!
I dont do many miles but have used the injector cleaner a few times but in this case not worked for me.

just thinking now want to do, the other notes say replace all 4 at the same time. Hubby wants to do it to save cost on labour charges.
just though.

thanks for listening
:)

My runs are even shorter than 5 miles but when I take fuel it's always at either Total or Esso, no supermarket fuel. Think I'm going to add some cleaner on a regular basis, will see what happens. Not that I have tickover or whatever problems but just as a precautionnary measure. Good luck to all.

ming: When you say .....better still stick a ltr of cheap vedge oil in on fill up .... what kind of oil do you have in mind then ?? Is it olive oil, corn or any other oil as long as it is vegetable??

ER ITS NOT OLIVE OIL OR CORN OIL. . . .must be the same in Belgium ,in england its the cheapest vegetable oil ,don't know what it is made off, anyhow its better than injector cleaner ,mechanics have used and known this gem for years. . . . .:)

corn oil or rape seed oil ,,,both are ok to use, but remember uk customs regulations limit your use to 2500 ltrs a year,:D :D :D without decleration

You mean the corn oil or ground-nut oil one can buy in the department stores ??(The oil you use to bake your steak or whatever in ??) And you say that mechanics have used and do know about this since ages but it's the first time I've ever heard it ?? If this is indeed the oil I'll go and get me a liter tomorrow as I have to fill up the car tomorrow..

Well if you think that there are people (ming) who are running their diesels with up to 30% or more filtered chipsoil, one 1L bottle of clean fresh oil wouldn't harm at all I guess. So I'm going to go for it from now on and see what future has in petto for me....

Yup Willo rest assured it is indeed a very good additive for any diesel motor , same as in very cold weather to add petrol to your tank [this has gone on also for years] with the advance of fuel heating this is now an obsolete practice, but it stopped waxing in cold temperatures , the oil treatment slowly cleans your fuel system ,as opposed to injector cleaner that is much quicker , but same rule applies to both that the ****e that always builds up in your tank and pipes has to go somewhere , and that place is your fuel filter [after all thats what its for ] so just expect to change that on a regular basis, a full tank of diesel +1 ltr of cooking oil is like a **** in the sea :p :p :D ;)

Hi all,

added earlier this week my 1l of 100% vegetale rapeseed oil, but I was thinking, since I always leave 1/4 in the tank before filling up, that 1/4 will have a certain % of that oil in it, thus by putting at every filling of the tank 1l of vegetale oil in, in the end the % of the vegetal oil in that 1/4 of fuel will raise and raise. Don't mock around and say that 1/4 gets used, I know that twot (with an A it gets censored:D ), but the 1/4 of fuel remaining will in the end have a rather big % of oil. Can't that be the reason that the fuel filter get's clogged in the end ? Because of the almost pure vegetale oil at a certain moment ?

Hi, have now had a diagnostic test done via a Land Rover garage and the fault was No 3 Injector.
Hubby has successfully changed it today and car running like a dream again!.
Now need to try and sell the other 3 injectors we bought:eek:
thanks

When you have a vehicle that is gammy, there is nothing quite like the drive back from the garage after a big repair.

The feeling of, "ahhhhh, I've got my car back..."

Cheers

Blippie

good result wendy, just remember to put some injector cleaner in a few times a year, or you may have the problem again,

my td4 no 2 injector has still not cleared itself using cleaner ,this time , but i havent given it a real good run for a while , so will give it another dose of cleaner and a blast down the motorway ,

failing that i may be interested in buying some injectors from you
