I've got a loose and tatty air filter hose and elbow pipe. I think I could clean it up and get it to at least stay on with some new jubilee clips but I'm not convinced I could make it 100% air tight.

Is its purpose only to draw air through the oil filter assembly to clean it, or is pressure involved as well? If i'm not using it in overly dry dusty surroundings do I not need to worry about it not being 100% air tight?

Ok. Suction is the better word, not pressure. Thanks Rob. I need to make it air tight or it will just pull air through the easiest route won't it and that won't be through the oil. I'll see what I can do. Old inner tube sounds good actually.

Those oil filled air filter systems on landrovers are designed to help the engine breath in very dusty conditions and as such they work well. However for road use they are a bit obsolete. I took mine off and fitted a modern air filter directly to the top of the carb. The result seems to be that the engine is more responsive but there is some extra induction noise, not unpleasant though.

I just typed "series landrover air filter" into eBay and it came up with a few choices. Mine cost a bit less than £20 three years ago.

Cheers all. I might start another thread with all my questions about how air filters improve performance. My brother's well into all that but I've never managed a straight answer out of him about it. :)

I was a bit reluctant to remove all the oil filled canister and pipe work because I like to keep it original but it takes up a lot of room. I have kept it all in the garage though so it can be passed on to the next owner if ever I sell it.

If you improve the air flow into the engine by getting a more efficient filter, you will need to tweak the carb a little to compensate. Remember, increased performance usually means decreased mpg if the engine was good to start with.

I tuned up a motorcycle and part of that was removing the airfilters and putting on trumpets plus all the rejetting and timeing. I got a lot more power but when I next stripped it there was a lot of fine bore wear from dirt, it really showed how much a decent airfilter removes.
