air con compressor clutch plate

is the plate that spins round on the outside of the pump the clutch plate
and can anyone tell me why it sometimes need a nudge to get to spin.
the air con works ok until this stops but is all ok again once i give it a tap
and it starts spinning again.
 
I know on some other manufacturers when you change the aircon clutch you've got to set the air gap using shims.I'd guess the system works the same way on landrover/rangerover aircon systems
 
The outside plate is the armature or "Drive plate", the clutch plate is behind it. There is shim washer(s) between the outer plate and the clutch plate which determines the clearance. Remove the nut on the end of the shaft, in the centre of the outer plate and pull the outer plate off. You will see the clutch plate sitting on the splined shaft, just slide the plate off and be careful not to lose the shim(s) in the process. If only one shim is fitted, remove it and refit the plates and nut. Check the clearance between the outer and inner plate, it should be no less than about 6thou. Start the engine, the inner plate or shaft should not be dragging against the outer plate, this will cause the clutch plate to wear out rapidly. Engage the clutch (Switch the aircon on).
 
Either a large pipe wrench or a chain or strap oil filter removal tool. There should also be 3 M6 tapped holes in the front face which are used to fit a special holding wrench, you could put a couple of M6 bolts in and place a bar through them. The nut is not mega tight.

maybe not,

the bolts are two close together making it impossible to fit a socket. unable to get a ring spanner on as the nut is to deep. i will have to
purchase a oil filter remover tool.

somebody at work today said if it is working from cold ( which it is ) and then cuts out when it gets hot it is because of a cut out switch which
is cutting in to protect. he also said that the likely cause is because the
fans should kick in to aid the cooling process and they are not working.
 
As I have posted before on the forum, there is a thermal cut out mounted on top of the compressor towards the rear, looks like a round disc, retained by a clip and has two wires coming from it. This cut out is wired in series (Inline) with the supply to the clutch coil. If you link the two wires together this will prove if the cut out is faulty. As far as I know, you cannot buy replacements. The cut out is supposed to protect the compressor from overheating but the majority of compressors do not have them. There is further protection from the pressure switches in the system which automatically switch the clutch off when the pressure gets too high. With aircon higher refrigerant temperature=higher pressure.
I have been running my aircon with it linked out for over 4 years without any problems.
The spindle nut, I think is a 13mm socket and I use a 1/4 socket set to remove it because the sockets are smaller diameter than 3/8" or 1/2" sq. drive

The pressure switch also triggers the condenser fans but they very rarely come on as the condenser is mounted in front of the engine radiator and is cooled mainly by the engine fan.

There are two wires from the cut out which go to what looks like a couple of bullet connectors.The wires from the cut out are removed from the connectors and the wires with the connectors on them are simply linked together.
