Hope you don’t mind me asking for advice, but I'm posting in the hope your members will be able to help ..

We purchased a 1988 110 Station wagon converted to a 200TDI..

It has a few things that need fixing ..

(see list below) ..

We are based in London but my boss lives in Sussex and we spend quite of bit of time in Surrey ..

Can you recommend any engineers .. being a charity we can’t afford to pay high commercial rates ..

I’ll post on the forum also .

Many thanks in advance.

Vital : -
Power Steering Leak (lost all fluid over 300 miles and now is manual steering which is tough !)
Clunk on power change (suggested probable ball joint, there is quarter of a turn play in the transmission aft of the handbrake cylinder )
Investigate rattles from exhaust baffle/ cat
Service
Investigate low top speed (max 65) and high fuel consumption (22MPH at 60-65) (Turbo houses / great box ratios ? )
When breaking with the lights on one light goes out (poor earth ?)
Options to be added / worked on once we have the vehicle serviceable:-

Investigate hole on load area floor plate (Appears to be a puncture to the metal vs any sort of corrosion)
Two forward facing rear seats.
Diagonal seatbelts (or racing harness may be cheaper ?) to centre front seat, 3 x 2nd row seats, two new forward facing seats in back.[securon trade] (perhaps two inward facing seats & lap belts if very low cost for use on Camp / off the highway) )
Two side roof windows need new seals (has one set failed to get a seal on other)
Replace all door locks (has new barrels) [perhaps we can do this]
Fit rear light guards (we may be able to do this)
Buy and fit a full length anodised roof rack & ladder and front light guards to match rear. (again we may be able to fit this but I’d imagine best price would be to obtain via your good self)
Investigate adding military style tow bar above existing domestic tow ball or change to combination hookup..
Sound damping kit ? (self fit ?)

I think we will be able to do all the paint work etc as it appears all cosmetic and we will paint in MoD Green.

How world I know if its the diff? Anyhow I'm out of my depth .. need hands on help / good mechanic .. any advice on finding ??

Any suggestions re the other issues very much appreciated !

London is kinda big - which bit?

Pretty much no-one I know can afford main dealer prices - anywhere between £60 to £150 a day depending on the stealership. Independents are usually lower than that, typically circa £30 p/h

Power Steering Leak (lost all fluid over 300 miles and now is manual steering which is tough !)
You'll probably see products that claim to cure the leaks - if it's as bad as you say you'll need a new steering box - Paddock Spares - Land Rover, Range Rover Parts & Accessories - Discovery, Defender and Freelander online price is circa £180 + VAT with £100 surchage on the exchange - not the worlds hardest job to do apparently but will be messy as all hell thanks to the leakage. Well worth changing the drop arm at the same time, circa £30 from the same source. I've got to do mine before long - if you're reasonably handy with a spanner its definitely something you can attempt yourself.

Clunk on power change (suggested probable ball joint, there is quarter of a turn play in the transmission aft of the handbrake cylinder )
Hopefully that's 1/4 turn with the handbrake off - if you can turn it even a mm or two with the handbrake on I'd be surprised. The balljoint is supposed to be a RPITA to get at, probably best to book it in for this one.

Investigate rattles from exhaust baffle/ cat
If it's a 200Tdi it doesn't need a cat to operate and it's not required for the MOT anyway. If there is a cat fitted (doubtful) - remove it and fit a straight pipe. I bought an entire exhaust for my 90 for about £100 and you can definitely fit this yourself. (see Paddockspares website for the exhaust - it's where I got mine from)

If you mean engine oil and filters this would take you about an hour if you really mess about with it. If you want to replace the gearbox, transfer box, axle and swivel pin fluids too then allow 2 to 3 hours tops. Buy a Haynes for it, should cost you £18 or so from Amazon - servicing is the easiest bit to do out of all the stuff you've mentioned and it'll save you a fortune doing it yourself.

Investigate low top speed (max 65) and high fuel consumption (22MPH at 60-65) (Turbo houses / great box ratios ? )
Could be the turbo hoses - but they're relatively expensive. Fuel and air filters need to be changed regularly if you're going to get the best out of it - particularly the air filter. Service it first and then see if it's any better. If not, then investigate the other options, including the injection pump timing.

When breaking with the lights on one light goes out (poor earth ?)
Probably - or a dodgy bulb, bulb holder or another intermittent wiring fault. Seek and ye shall find. First step you could try is taking the filter off the affected light and taking the bulb out - if it's loose or looks rusty etc. then you've probably found your culprit.

Hope that helps,

you could always opt for the option of tarting up the 110 selling it and buying a series 3 station wagon which is easyer and cheeper to run

Thanks so much for the replies .. No offers or pointers to a good mechanic ..

So we took it down to a specialist restorer ..

Service : Oil, Coolant, filters etc etc between 100- 300
Steering : New pipe & fitting to pump £100
Clunk : Seems like rear half shaft (the rear wheels move half a turn on the hubs !) £200
Silencer replacement: 100

So just to get it fit for the road £500-750 !! Ouch ouch ouch !! (we have very little spare £)

Performance seems to be the transfer ratio so new gears £350 !! (Cant afford) Seats etc will all have to wait (we will just have to leave some cadets behind :) for Easter Camp :p )

So we are in the poo to some degree .. Not going to sell as the chassis is in good condition and the engine is sound (replaced 2006)

We are very green .. so any / all advice is very much appreciated !!

P.

go to a breakers, might have a newer transfer box ? maybe look in the back of a landy mag or someone on here might know of one.
clunk: could be the diff?? maybe that would also give the play at the hub.
seats may also be at a breakers ;)
