Air Brakes Possibility

ive seen defender td5's with a factory fitted air brake attatchment for trailers. i was wondering if it was possible to do the same to a Discovery 2 td5 or if anyone has done anything similar to another vehicle even.

Course it is have seen loads of 4x4's fitted with a 5th wheel attachment and all the associated air brakes that go with them. All you need is a compressor a storage tank and a few valves and some air lines.

just remember you will need the correct valve gear on the braking system to activate the trailer brakes or you will either rip the arse off your landy or end up jack knifed

Fook aye deffo not a DIY job. Google for an installer and have it done professionally.

wow really would be that possible, thanks for the feedback thinking about looking into it as i do alot of miles with a trailer and haveing air brakes would take alot of strain off of the car, wouldn't it?

its only a different method of actuating a braking system, shirley?

might be discoveries dont pull 38 tons ? or it might be air brakes are more powerfull than vacuum/fluid brakes ? what ever it is i cant see any real posative reason to want them on a discovery ? just another gadget to go wrong

You get more effort with air brakes , they are a lot more powerful.
In the sixties, lorries fitted with air brakes (as it was a new system of braking then) used to have a warning sign on the back saying 'Caution - Air brakes' to warn motorists that the lorry may be able to stop quicker than they could.

lol i want that pssssst noise mind u, u get it sometimes from the air suspension. would be good though to make a really loud psssssst noise, purhaps i should just install a compressor and a tank **** the brakes.

You'd have to be pretty ****in serious about towing some heavy stuff to need airbrakes. You can tow up to 3.5 tons with normal overrun trailer brakes. Surely if you need to tow more than that you ought to get a wagon? Pretty sure anything fitted with air brakes would be subject to hgv style MOT's too.

the other thing about air brakes is that they are normally "on".
the brakes are held on with a fookin great spring and the air pressure compresses the spring and releases the brakes.
you can't drive a truck until the engine run compressor has built up enough pressure to release the brakes.
the pssssttttssssssssss sound is the air being released to operate the brakes.
they are "fail safe" - if the braking system fails, they are locked on - unlike a car braking system.

so what is the maximum that a landrover td5 disco 2 (auto) can actually tow?
