Hello. After solving a few oil leaks on my 98 300 tdi. I found it still was dripping oil. Well i looked at the vacuum pump thinking it could be that. then i spotted it leaking from a rubber plug. there's three holes and i can only think the other two have come out on there own accord. end one near flywheel end has no oil round it the one at the back of the vacuum pump has some oil round it and the one above the lift pump had one in it but oil was coming from around it. I took it out to find I could see the cam through the hole. the plug is around 1" long. Can anyone tell me what they are called and What they do. Apart from stopping oil coming out. It seems to me that the oil pressure hasn't reached the end cam bearing cos the pressure wasn't there to feed it Because the pressure was lost with the leak. If no one knows what they are can some one check there 300 tdi see if it has these rubber plugs there small but visible from right side of engine. Cheers everyone.

no there not they are end of drillings for cam brg feed other side of cam normally filled with silicone or plug they shouldnt leak as cam brg should seal as is tight fit in housing thers something wrong if they are actually leaking

cheers there is a tapping noise think its the cam so bearings might be knackered but it is ****ing out. oooop's Do you know what they are called the plugs that is?

plugs, you will have to replace before it buggers up ,oil pressure will be low ,youi need to get right brgs to replace and tool for fitting which is tricky as it has to go in square and oil feed holes line up ,some types need reaming after

Can this be done with engine in car. ? or does the cam come out the back of engine? If it's enginge out job. Then may as well overhaul the whole thing. If it can be done in the car then i'll sort cam and overhaul next year.

it would come out back as brgs are all same diameter, but is held by clamp at front ,you do need block set on end to fit if you dont have special tool for fitting,if you can get cam brgs that have jigsaw type join rather than straight split as they fit better

Great I will seal holes up. for now then see about doing this job soon. Think I might overhaul engine. been looking for an excuse. lol Thanks for the advice.
