I need to replace the front cross member bottom brackets. My question is now I have taken the wing off and got access, floor removed etc I cant see any easy way to get the bracket In their without total destruction of the pillar and more importantly the outside coverings of the footwell (to the right of accelerator) and the bits around where the bolts show now.

Whats the best practice for getting the bracket in there ? I am worried there appears to be the body covering which I need to get out of the way ?

Grind one side pry it over and try and fold back ? There doesn't seem to be an obvious way.
The bracket to be replaced.

The bracket to go in.

Do I need to cut out all of the below ?

I don't understand, Keeping in mind I cant place it over the bodywork its not access for welding as much as access for getting it in.

I know it's a series but I just found this in Google
http://forum.landrovernet.com/showthread.php/133406-replacing-door-pillar-bottoms

On the series I've just spent four days welding they just rotted away and unfortunately the footwells and pillars had as well, the guy I bought the replacement panels off said that they just got inserted from the bottom of the door pillar, then you lined it up with the lower hinge and wing holes and then tacked into place with a small bit of weld

Are your repair panels from YRM?
They are the lower door pillar and foot. ie the bottom of the bulkhead where it bolts to the front outriggers. They are a major structural section. Which part of 'the body covering' are you referring to? The side of these panels is part of the outer visible part of the vehicle. This is a side view of mine.

You can see the bolt tube and bolt fixing it to the outrigger. The bolt tube is visible on your repair pieces.
I can't see an easy way for you to replace them. By the look of it you will need new footwell repair panels too.
It will mean cutting it all out, clamping the new sections in place, tack welding then fully welding them up.

The footwell feet are spot welded in place to the pillar.
Can be difficult to see, but a spot weld drill is your friend for this job. I've just done it off the vehicle, not sure if that's better or worse as I was worried about getting it in the wrong place.

Surely they don't wrap over the pillar? That would move the bolt tube out of alignment with the outrigger, wouldn't it?

what aaron said - they go inside.

Its unusal for the bracket to rot out without taking the bottom of the pillar with it - have you checked the bottom of your pillar is solid steel and not infact solid P38 ?

They slot inside the door pillar mate. Then one welds to the other spot/plug weld.
Spot on... That's the missing element...I have taken the surface paint off in an effort to look for the welds, nothing yet.

I appear to have forgotten how to remove the wing... ? I have done it before, taken off all bolts from wing into the drivers front bulkhead, and removed radiator bolts through to the wing... removed inner wing... bolts all I can see but it still seems stuck. DO I need to break the outer from the inner wing ?

I only want enough so I can get a good weld of the footwell whilst I am doing the bracket 7 hours in :( need to do before winter. Just want the wing forward a foot and it would do so no need for electrics to be touched.

Ref spot welds, you're only looking for a slight dimple, can be quite hard to see, mine had been shot blasted which did make it easier, but still missed a couple at times.

No need to split inner wing, I always lift off complete. From memory their should be,
4 bolts - bulkhead pilar
2 pozi screws to foot well
Moving around should be 2 m8 bolts through inner wing, either side of shock turret would be the easiest way to describe.
Moving forwards again, between the inner wing and the front of wing (bit bellow headlight) their should be 1 m8 bolt to the chassis.
Then slam panel bolts as you've already mentioned.
Oh and not to forget, the 1 m6 bolt from wing top-bulkhead.

Cheers, Aaron. You live and learn. There's a hell of a lot of weight/force acting on those spot welds!

That's what I was thinking. I can understand the pressure of winter coming on cos I'm in the same boat, but well worth giving it a good test with a hammer while you're in there.
