Advice please...Freelander 2.0 di, power drop

I bought an S Reg 2.0 litre Diesel a few months back. Not long after iy started to lose power very briefly and periodically at about 3000 rpm, if it was a petrol i would have called it a misfire. It has steadily got worse and now it is really bad, doing it all the way through the rev range. It's probably something fairly common and i would like to fix it myself if poss so any advice would be greatly appreciated. cheers
