Advice on upping tyre size

hi all.

Hope someone can give me a little advice. I'm sure it probably gets asked a lot.
Currently my 95 Disco 1 is on standard springs and shocks. I'm running 235/70/16 insa turbo special tracks. They've been amazing through all that snow in the winter and through the mud off road. But I'm changing to some all terrain tyres. I can't stand the dull humming anymore I'd like to put some larger tyres on, maybe 235/85/16's or someone suggested 265/75/16's.

My question is, could I get away with chopping the arches and adding some flexi arch extenders to achieve the needed room or do I have to lift my car to fit larger tyres? I don't mind lifting of I have to, but I was hoping to get the tyres on with extenders and lift at a later date if possible.

Has anyone else done anything similar or have any advice at all? I'd certainly appreciate any input

Not necessary........... But it helps

Depends on rims as to how much offset you need.

Disco steels need spacers for sure.

235/85 r16 is a good standard tyre size and fits well on a 7" wide rim, Disco's need trimmed on the rear of the rear arch.

Deep dish alloys are ET00 and mine needed just a slight trim to stop in catching and the inner lip around the arch needed bent upwards a little.

This is mine on a little bit of articulation.



Steering stops need to be adjusted too, this is a bit of a problem as it then gives you the turning circle of a double decker bus, this will be further exacerbated with the wider 265/75 r16.

Spacers seem to be the marmite subject and receive equally amounts of praise and dismissive posts regarding their fitment.

I know that the wider footprint of the 265 might be desirable at times but airing down the 235 will achieve the same footprint and traction in soft conditions but the narrower tyre will be ultimately better on slick clays where the ability of the tyre to bite through the top snot into firmer ground beneath.
