Series 3 Advice on Overdrive operation

Overdrive is a slow change unit so you cant rush the gear change. It makes an excellent splitter gear for use on hills, going 3rd, 3rd overdrive, 4th and finally 4th overdrive.

Can be used in all gears, it was only the range rover ones that could only be used in 3rd and 4th due to the more powerful engine in it

It can be used in all gears but is advised to only use it in 3/4 because the torque kills them in 1st or second if you put your foot down. They really aren't that durable a unit.

It's also very rare to need overdrive with first or second. It's most useful as a splitter between 3rd and 4th when towing or up long steep hills.
 
Yeh.Good as splitter gear but I find it's got no real torque. Not much use when towing. Mines a Bearmach unit. Its a pig to engage. Has to be at the right speed.
 
Thanks for all the replies. I may be being daft, but in order to replace the drive flange gaskets I'll have to pull the halfshafts out completely. Right?

I only ask so that I can work out how much room I'll need to do the job.

If, as suggested, I just replace the rear diff as a start. Would you also remove the front prop? Or just try and remember not to engage 4wd? I guess if it's really slippery then a small amount of 4wd with mismatched diffs is better then nothing?

To replace drive shaft gaskets, take off the dust cover or FRee wheeling hub if fitted.

Then you should see a castellated but with split pin, remove the split pin.

Remove the castle but with a 1" socket, if front axle it will spin unless you put it in 4 wheel drive in gear.

Once that's off you can then remove the bolts for the drive flange andslide over the end of the halfshaft
 
You'll know in a week of you like them or not but I wouldn't engage 4wd at all. Just don't get into a situation that you'll need 4wd. Which also means no low range
 
With mismatched diffs, dont go into 4x4 otherwise you'll wreck the transmission. I dont think you have to remove front propshaft as its not connected to the drive during normal rear wheel drive. If you have free wheeling hubs fitted id engage them anyway just to be sure
 
No need to disengage front prop at all.... To be fair on a wet muddy field you'd probably struggle to cause any damage with mismatched diffs (though I'd not recommend doing so)
The whole don't drive in 4x4 on dry tarmac or the sky will fall, down is slightly misleading....
The worse Landrover themselves ever professed was increased tyre wear.

Don't get me started on those that profess doom when running a lt77 in permanent 4x4 with a standard series front axle..... ;-)
