I'm another newbie, and I have been scouring the existing threads for info on bulkhead repair, and cant get the info I need.

I have recently started to tart up my 92 defender and am trying to determine how to best proceed with the bulkhead.

The corners are iffy, and I'm not sure of the repair flashings will do the job as the rot seems to be in the structural stuff behind the flashing piece. The rest of the bulkhead looks ok to me and I dont know if I need to go to the extreme of replacing the entire bulkhead as it looks like a major undertaking.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to repair this, or is it time for a new bulkhead?

i started off only wanting to do a few tart up jobs, but if you got that far i would replace the bulkhead and strip off rest of body clean up chassis and rebuild from there

I was hoping for a different answer......I havnt got the first notion how the hell I'm gonna get the rest taken apart. I dont even know if i'll ever get that bloody dash back in!!

Well.....if its a chassis.......repair or buy new? if new which one is best???

All depends on what you want to spend in my opinion. Of course, the best solution is to replace it and buy new. But in reality, you've got a fair few choices.

1) Leave it as it is - will get worse but won't 'fall apart' for several years.

2) Do a patch job which will last several years if well done.

3) Do a full repair job, cutting out all rust and re-fabricating all the internal components before giving it an internal rust protection and final finish.

4) Buy another 2nd hand - but then what are you getting yourself into?

5) Buy new.

The thing is, a Landy is like triggger's broom. It'll never die so just do what you need to now given your buget and deal with it again as and when necessary.

Out of interest mine is worse than yours and will be repaired to give it a new lease of life.
