Hi guys im new to this forum and was wondering if anyone could help me, ive currently got a 300 tdi disco and will shortly be selling it to upgrade to a disco 2 and want to know what models if not all have the air suspension and from what year, or is it best avoided ?

Hi
All disco 2 with 7 seats have air rear suspension.the five seat car rarley has air suspension just spring all round. My personal opinion is if you dont need seven seats dont buy one with air as they are great when working ok but when they go wrong they can be very costly and sometimes main agent only.
all best jason

I have an 01 Td5 with rear air suspension as it's 7 str - as said above all 7 strs had air .
Mine had a habit of going down on one side from time to time - last night I changed the air bag ( had it for 2 months ) and all's fine since . And it only cost €100 - main dlr wanted €280 .
I had considered changing over to coils as the kit is not that expensive from Paddocks and the work involved fairly straightforward .But as of now I am staying with air .I haven't driven any D2 with rear coils so can't give any comparison - but I do know that the car sits the same with just myself or with 6 others . This is where the self levelling (SLS) comes in and of course there is a lot of extra electronics involved - with more to go wrong .
I have seen it advised here (particularly if you go off road) that the air bags should be washed down at regular intervals as the build up of grit can cause leaks .
Having read a lot of threads I don't think it's particularly troublesome and if it becomes so you can change over to coils easily enough . If ,like me , you need a 7 str then you will have to accept air suspension - unless you come across one that has been changed over already .

The air suspension is not complicated at all. It comprises of a couple of balloons, an air pump and a set of quite basic electronic controls that make it all work.

Air bags/pipes can leak
Compressors can wear out
Ride height sensors can fail
Never heard of a computer going wrong.

Land Rover suggest that the air bags be changed every 5 years. Check the service history and if not ... change them.
and factor £200 for the parts, do the ride height sensors as well for £50. **** easy job, like changing a lightbulb but with jacks..!

I have had problems with my air suspension, but for the ride quality I wouldnt change them for coils...

If you are looking for an off road workhorse or playtoy then maybe air is not the best idea... but then nor is the 6-7k or so you'd spend on a TD5 with air....Saying that my TD5 is not without it's scratches, I've taken it where all the tricked up Greenlaners have been and it's performed superb. The air even giving it an advantage!

One thing about the Disco 2 is it's slightly longer overhang at the back compared to the disco 1. The air suspension overcomes this when in off road mode as in adjusts the departure angle in favor of the Disco1's.

I think the air suspension isnt that bad on these. The major prob i seen with them is water build up in the system but this is easily sorted by renewing the air receiver/ drier at servicably intervals. If left this buggers the compressor. Air bags are easy to change and the air suspension is a great tool for making it easier to hitch on trailers ect.

Thanks for all your replies guys, they will help a lot when i start searching.
Just got to mot my 300 and then its into the papers with it, will post here too.
