Hi guys ive just bought a freelander td4 the previous owner has taken the prop for the 4wd off so now running 2wd. Is this a done thing and will it harm the vehicle in any way ??

A lot of sellers do take the prop of to sometimes (not always) mask problems with the diff, ird unit, vcu coupling

What's the milage?

better one way to really see if anything is wrong put the prop back on or source one to fit.

Another reason some take it off is to get better fuel economy

Anohrr

Plenty of threads about it if you search..

Yes it's commonly done. No it doesn't do any harm. (Mine is 2wd currently) but they drive a lot better when the prop is on.

Obviously so thing went wrong and they couldn't afford/be bothered to replace the failure... Usually the vcu.

Thanks for the replies guys. Its on 120k and ive bought it off my gaffers dad who took the prop as he says when trying to do a sharp turn with steering fully locked over it felt like the car was trying to go forwards slightly still like a dragging motion almost so was recommended to take prop off for a better drive??

Sounds like the viscous coupling had failed... If there were no clunks etc it may just (if you are lucky) be the coupling. It may have damaged the ird and / or the diff.

The vcu usually fails after around 70k but depends on a lot of factors.
