hi guys, i am looking to buy a new 110 2.5 diesel have viewed but there is an oil leak im not sure about coming from
1 - the top of the oil filter - could just be a case of a new filter and seals
2 - leaking from between some valve jobbie right next to the filter which im not sure about

i have been eagle eyeing the internet for pics of engines to find out what this is called, why it is leaking and if it would smash a hole in my pocket to fix

any ideas?!?!

cheers x

All landys drip oil (except the new 2.4tdci one i glanced at in the show room today - i guess it had not had any put in it yet)

If you let us know the year / reg letter that will give an idea of which engine it has in it, and help identify the problem.

Oil blowing arond the top of the filter is indicative of either the filter not being screwed on tightly/seal gone, or a blockage in the oil system causing back pressure, however it's more likely the oil is running down from somewhere else or has just been there from the last time the filter was changed.

Does oil spray out/ seep out when the engine is running

Any chance of a photo

hi yeah its a 1990 h reg, i think there might be a little oil coming from the top but not excessively. also there is a slight knock in the drive in 4th and th around 35 - 50 mph which is top speed for me! doesnt sound too clever, and there is a bump when you select gears think this might be a clutch problem??!!

will post pics tommorrow (sunday)

thanks

The 'bump' or knock as you pull away or release the clutch changing gear is pretty much expected in an older Landy, all it is is a bit of slack in the drivetrain that has built up over the years, not really anything to worry about.

haha! well ive since discovered that the oil leak is most probably the rocker cover gasket? would do good to whack a new one on. do you know if it is quite a tricky tinker? also going to tke the chance to replaice the master clutch oil and diff oil as this would hopefully quieten the ride slightly and would just be good to do anyway

got another question do you think it is worth putting a new time belt on as ive just bought this landy so no idea when it was replaced last??

is there any indications of wear on the belt?

cheers :D

If you really want to love your landy I suggest you get a haynes manual. Start with a Two Yearly service and change the belt. If you are unsure get it done at a dealer because you need special tools to get the pulleys off and if you get it wrong you will destroy that engine. The diffs etc are relativly simple.

I'm still not sure which engine you are running it could be 200tdi/NA/or Turbo. Send a photo and point out the leaks and we'll set u straight.
