can anybody tell me if its possible to code an additional key fob....and if so how...or does it have to be done by the dealer?....thanks
 
I would like to know the answer to this question too. I have a Fob from a 98 rover 214, it looks exactly the same as the Landrover one.

How you I program it you work with my Freebi. Would I need testbook to do this?

I know how to do it on a VW, but at a loss with LandRovers?

Just noticed on the back of them the Landy one says Lucas 17TN Key and the rover one says Lucas 3TXA Key

whats the difference and will the 3TXA one work on my Landy.

rather self explanatory i would of thought if it says tht on the back. but i would check with local dealer and see what they say. but if they quote a ridiculas price i would be warey and try and get round that!
 
I looked into this for mine as I only have one fob and was told it was dealer only. Would love that info to be wrong, though.
 
All you need is a garage that uses test book or a compatible diagnostic machine,takes 5 minutes. If you are anywhere near birmingham try s.a.s auto's at yardley, ask for tom.
 
That's not excessive, but I believe your original fob is needed as well as it is a rolling code system I believe.
 
From what I have found previously (which may or may not be applicable for LR). When a fob key is pressed it generates a two part code. The 1st part is the serial no and is specific to the fob, the second is a rolling number using a specific algorithm which is different for each system manufacturer. In order to pair a fob the receiver has to be told the serial number and set to accept the 1st rolling number. This is because if the rolling number is more than a set number of steps (128 being typical) out of sequence it will refuse to accept the code.

On many system all the fobs have to be uploaded to the receiver at the same time which is why you have to provide all fobs when it is altered. As to having additional fobs it depends on how many can be stored on the receiver, I know for example Mercedes will take 4 (LR?) but the Immobilisation ECU will support up to 10 ignition keys according to the RAVE disk. Each fob requires the serial no and the last code generated stored. There is no relationship between the fobs hence you can have a spare unused for years and be completely out of sequence with your daily use one and it will still work. Sometimes you will see this referred to as a random code but if it was truely random it could not work.

So to summarise the additional fob must use the same process to generate the code so should be of the same type, the receiver must be able to accept additional fobs and you need specialist equipment to set up the receiver.

Of course all the above could be totally useless as we know Landrover like to do things differently to everybody else:D:D
 
Thankyou Missing Link, excactly right except I didn't have time to explain in my last post in such detail,simply to say you need all available "fobs" when adding spares using Test Book etc.
 
I understand that there are two to three fob variations and you do need to buy the same type to have it reprogrammed due to the frequency used by the unit and the in-car reciever. Any good auto-electrician should be able to programme the unit for you, though i'll ba damned if I can find one in my neck of the woods.
I have been quoted £150 by my local LR dealership for a new key, fob and programming and a half hours labour to re-programme a fob given to them - this equates to between £35-£70 depending upon who you speak to.

Dashed good value, what?:confused:
