I have read on a couple of threads now that owners are adding approx 250ml of 2-stroke mineral oil to their full tank of diesel when they fill up - why do you do this?

What's the advantage and cost of the oil?

Thanks in advance.

NM.

why do you do this?

try googling " why use 2 stoke oil in diesel fuel "
be loads of discussion .. for and against ..

e.g.

Adding 2 stroke oil to diesel tank - read this - The Brick-yard - Page 1

Diesel fuel additives... this time 2 stroke oil | Motoring discussion | Back Room Forum | Honest John

2 stroke oil added to fuel - this needs to be a story! Page1 - Diesel Power Forums at Diesel Power Magazine

in short :
for lower exhaust emissions .. diesel fuel these days is low-sulphur ..
sulphur use to be added for lubrication of fuel system components
( or was a production by-product that was found to aid lubrication )

in theory ..
adding 2-stroke oil ensures lubrication of said components ..
also aids cleaning of combustion deposits .. combats corrosion

Hi nmclean77,

Welcome to the forum. As hd3 say's it's to aid lubrication of the fuel system. I have been using it in my TD4 for about a year now with every full tank (250mm) you will find lots of post on the subject and it's best to spend a bit of time reading through them to get a better understanding as to why people use 2 stroke oil in their fuel.

Don't be put off asking questions on the forum by those that like to belittle new members, they were new members thenselves once asking questions about this and that so just ignore them and carry on asking your input is welcomed by many helpfull freelander owners only to willing to help.

Thanks Singvogel and Grayo.

I've just had my Freelander serviced (intermediate service), then filled up, so I've popped 250ml in the tank.

Since the service, it is running a lot better and smoother.

I suppose the 2-stroke will mix with the fuel over the next tankful, so results should be seen in the future.

I also threw half a bottle of Redex fuel system cleaner in for good measure.

We'll see what happens.
