Not living in a location where AC is required very often, should I run it anyways every now and again just to keep everything working? If so, what length of time should I run it for?

Most advice I've seen suggests using it for at least 30 minutes each month.
The air-con is actually quite useful in cold weather as well as it dries the air. Use the air-con in conjunction with the heater to end up with warm, dry air that's great for demisting the windows- more effective than warm air on its own.

If you have manual control or climate control AC, switch on as needed and adjust temperature to suit you sir.
