sorry but can resist this but after how many miles did you recheck your wheel nuts dr (on the landy) ???

about 70, got my new tyres put on the disco, drove it for a week then tightened them back up with a torque wrench. One nut was slightly loose the others were all fine, wheel place tells everyone to check them as it only takes a few minutes and its better safe than sorry

done the ones on the gti too after I changed the wheel

Seen too many pics and freds over the years on here of wheels flying off....usually front left.

I check mine about once fortnightly and before every long journey

It's irrelevant weather you do or don't, you should. When working at Honda garage we told customers to come back after 50 mile so we could check them

If wheelnuts keep coming loose then chances are the wheelstuds have been stretched in the past, so you tighten them more in the vain hope that it will help when in fact it just makes things worse. There is loads of research on the net about truck wheels falling off, mainly because of the loads they carry puts more stress on the wheels and makes it happen more often but when you think about it off-roading puts a lot more stress on wheels as well, as does fitting larger diameter wheels/tyres.

Is it really that hard to use a torque wrench?

Yes

First cause most of the population (including me) wont be sure what one is

Second, if they do, they probably don't have one (I might have when I find out exactly what it looks like)

If this is necessary then garages and tyre places should tell people and either show them how to check or arrange for the vehicle to come back for checking.

Edited for the other dummies on here :D It looks like the ratchet thing in your socket set but according to google you can change how tight it tightens stuff with some sort of switch. Will be checking all the ones in my tool box at the weekend to see if I have one :D

Almost, you can still overtighten with a torque wrench.
the setting on it makes it click when it gets to the preset torque.
Ive got one somwhere, its a 3ft long one :)
Ill admit, I don't torque up, but I do loosen and retighten on a regular basis, usually every couple of weeks when I check the oils & fluids.
Decided on this from when I came to change a bearing and couldn't get the fecker off, took liberal doses of penetrating fluid, a large impact wrench and a long bar to get them off, took a bit of rattling to get em off.

This happened to a chap I no a few days ago. He's had the car a few months. Got OCD so constantly taking wheels off to clean calipers. And blamed the last owner for putting **** wheel nuts onit :/
