I have a 300tdi auto discovery es.. (1994 M-reg). done the bridging connectors to read fault codes and im getting the following codes....

2-2
2-12
4-12
4-14
5-12
6-12

anyone know what these are? i read thet the 2-12, 5-12 ans 6-12 all relate to the right hand front wheel speed sensor.. but not sure of the others

thanks

have you taken the sensors out and cleaned them yet easy job,if not give it a go or just tap them all the way in first and try that (the pressure when wheel turns push them to right position)
this worked for me.

Not tried that yet but will be doing on saturday. Im wondering if it may be something more serious as the bulb had been removed from the abs light when i bought the car. I got it from a landrover mechanic, he told me the abs had been disconnected due to a common fault with the discovery which usually costs around £1000 for the part so it easier to just disconnect the abs alltogether.. But obviously if its there it should be working... Or maybe they just couldnt be arsed to fix the fault so took bulb out and made some ****ty excuse.. I get some slight squeeking from the brakes on the same wheel, could this be related to the abs fault? all 4 wheels lock up when braking hard..

ive got 2 lists of the fault codes, according to the lists they relate to either cab mounted ECU or frame mounted ECU, and the other list is a long list of unknown origins, but when i did mine both sets of codes were needed. here's what ive got on my lists .......

2-2 = LEFT FRONT solenoid valve (inlet or outlet valve) failure in modulator, wiring harness or inside ECU. (taken from cab-mounted ECU code list)

2-12 = AIR GAP, right hand front wheel speed sensor

4-12 = not listed in either of my lists?

4-14 = not listed on either of my lists?

5-12 = Sensor or wiring on left hand front wheel speed sensor

6-12 = No output or air gap with right hand front wheel speed sensor

hope this helps?

Thanks for that, I have managed to find the following...

4-12 = FRONT RIGHT - wiring to sensor broken or sensor resistance too high

4-14 = FRONT LEFT - as 4-12

5- 12 = FRONT RIGHT - intermittent fault with sensor or wiring.

so how did they disable it ?maybe just main fuse under bonnet.
but you will need it lite for the mot if they notice that is.

Had the abs sensor out to be cleaned and it was covered in some kind of grease.. cleaned it, put it back in and removed it again and more grease on the end. Is this normal? tapped it gently back in still not made no difference.. still getting the same fault codes.. have also checked the fuses and relays and all seem to be ok, but the pump is not kicking in.. if i press the brake pedal in while i start the engine it just stays as it is.. I believe you can feel the pump kick in on the pedal.. is this correct?

How can I check the pump?

Thanks
Shaun

there is a relay that commonly fails, but i forget which 1 it is:doh: possibly the ABS pump relay? sure someone will say thats right or wrong soon.

the grease is normal, the sensors go into your swivel ball housing and that grease is swivel ball grease - nothing to worry about.

as for the sensors - have you checked your wheel bearings? if they're failing then that throws up ABS faults. if your bearings feel ok, and you find the sensors are good, then it could be the same problem i had - there are needle roller bearings that seat the drive shaft, mine had collapsed completely and lost all their needles and this kept throwing up ABS faults and applying the ABS randomly. unfortunately there is no way to check these other than strip the front hubs down, not a particularly nice job!

I managed to find the relay, its the black one in passanger footwell.. might get a replacement just incase.. Im gonna clean all the sensors, check all the wiring then clear the faults drive it a bit see how that works.. But is there a way I can test the pump just to rule out that been one of the faults? I believe that the 2-2 fault code relates to something to do with the pump but not 100% sure on that one.. hopefully someone can shed some light on that 2-2 fault code..

Cheers

2-2 = LEFT FRONT solenoid valve (inlet or outlet valve) failure in modulator, wiring harness or inside ECU.

unplug the large plug going into the ABS modulator under the bonnet and give it a spray of WD40. change the relay under the glovebox. that 'should' sort out the 2-2 fault code

Gonna take the front sensors out today, for a good clean and check over.. Says in the haynes that a new sensor bush and seal will be required for re fitting.. Is this really necessary for the moment to try get it working?

about 6 years ago I had passenger side front ABS sensor problem, and done as you are endeavouring to do, just ensure all dirt etc, is cleaned away from sensor before pulling it out, remove sensor carefully and it will be fine to reinstall. Just dont be tempted to try and remove the seal and bush as they may get damaged then you'll be replacing them. I think the only reason the manual says replace is, there is a slight depression around the top os seal when sensor is init, this may allow water to enter if seal is damaged. The bush on the other hand, there appears to be no logical reason as to why they suggest to replace it. mine is still working fine 6 years later.

The ABS as you are aware, is disabled until all components are functioning correctly, so until you get every damn little thing in the system working, the ECU will not send signal to booster unit, so you will not feel kick in pedal until all wheel sensors are working to begin with, and in turn every thing else in the chain. could you borrow a known good front and rear sensor from some where.

Thanks for that mate.. couldnt borrow any sensors, shame though as that would help identify if the problem lies with the sensor.. I'll just give em all a good clean and try it.. I'll read for the fault codes again too to see if clearing the sensors atleast gets the fault code cleared..
