Aaron's 90 rebuild (round 3)

You also need to make sure it's super clean, not just a light dusting.

Yep. So shot blasting is the only way to go really.

If you get it dipped you don't need to get it blasted as it will remove everything blasting will AND MORE

But if it only gets done prior to going in the galv bath I wouldn't know if their is anymore unknown damage before hand. Or it would save money and be a great idea :)

B

But there might then be further damage appear that you couldn't see prior to the dipping. I agree though that if you have a decentish chassis it would be nice to save it.

This exactly! Better put than me.

You could always sell the existing chassis to help fund the cost of a shiny galvanised one. I like the thought of not having to worry about the tinworm, and a rebuild on a new chassis is much cleaner work.

Agreed. It's lovely working on a nice new chassis.

I did pick a set of alloys up over the weekend for very little and knew someone else who has a new set of tyres for sale - BFG's - Turns out the tyres were 285's so these got turned down as I thought they were way too large for the vehicle - I actually saw them and even a 110 would have looked stupid on them!

Not nececerily, galv needs clean rust free steel to chemicly adhere to. Acid does remove rust if left in long enough but doesn't remove grease oil and paint, OK you can dip twice, this burns off the oil etc but then need re dipping in the acid to remove any galv first time round.
Galv plants arnt really keen to do this as it is time consuming and ****s up both galv bath and acid.
All planst will pickle in acid before dipping.

Here speaks the man who knows :D

What parts will you be wanting blasting aaron?

Pretty much the same as you really bud, axles, radius arms, trailing arms, a-frame arms, bulkhead, cappings, inner wings and just general brackets.
Could you be of any assistance :D;)

Im sure we can work something out, i'll send you a private message tomorrow evening so I can find some free time to do them for you :)

Thanks, that sounds good :) No major rush, I need to sort everything out first and get everything stripped to bare components.
Will try and come up with a list of stuff tonight.

Oh and this new site layout thingy sucks at times, tried replying half a dozen times to thread (last night, this morning and when home from work) and crashed everytime.

Another issue with doing galvanising yourself is that you are responsible for the issues. Warping chassis blocked drain so one side is heavier or just full of the galv. Blocked holes etc. Still it should we worth it.

Loving this rebuild thred, I was given a price of £380+ the dreded for having my chassis galvanised by wedge in Liverpool.

Cheers :) Can't wait to get into it properly.
I think at £380+ the dreaded, then shot blasting, plus any repairs, I'd be tempted to buy new.

i just can't get pages to load anymore

Sounds like you have the same problem as me.

Yes, it's the bulkhead that worries me more than anything.

My shiny Richard's Chassis has a few issues :(

You don't seem to be having much luck bud :(
Mine seemed good and will probably be buying another soon.

Well it's all very slowly slowly at the mo, no real progress as such. Really haven't got the energy to do much when I get home and have been grafting all day, ended up working all day yesterday after what was meant to be until dinner time
So having sorted the blasting issue :) today's job was to start sorting-out for that.
The projects all a little higgledy piggledy to be honest, where I would usually just stuff everything in the garden/shed, do the axles, new chassis, build rolling chassis and then find stuff as and when I need it.
Whereas now, because I'm wanting to blast and galv a lot of stuff, I need to strip all that stuff now ready. Still it doesn't help when I'm not sure which way to go with the axles. I'm definitely going to source a disc rear axle, just deciding whether it'll be better to buy a more reasonable front too.
We're going to do the blasting in a few batches, just got the bulkhead to strip and the first lot is ready for the off.

Well things haven't really gone to plan, as per usual for me.
The plan last week was to get the bulkhead stripped in the evenings so I can get the first lot to blasting as soon as possible.
But as the boss is off this week we was working silly hours all last week so we could try and wipe some jobs up, and,well... I really couldn't be arsed to do anything when I got home.
Thought ok I'll crack on Saturday, but mate rings me and says "can you do my wheel bearing today"
Ok I thought, I've got a press nowadays so shouldn't take more than a couple of hours. Got it all apart much quicker than anticipated, stuck the hub in the press, 20tons. Nothing, didn't even budge!
Ok, we need heat, so got plumber round with blow torch (not as hot as I'd like but thought we'd give it a try) Still nothing.
Thought about a ring of weld to try and shrink it a little, nope, no bloody gas.
Ended up going to someone in a hgv garage with a 60T press to get it out.
But we f*cked around for hours, so most of Saturday was wasted
Still I did manage to strip the best part of the bulkhead, with just the wiper motor and sound proofing to remove.

The bulkhead is worse than first thought, seems the seller had put tin patches in, a little bit of silicone dorbed in here and their and with the dash in you wouldn't know any different

All repairable, but more work than I thought it was going to be, god only knows what will be uncovered when it is blasted.

The rest of the time was spent clearing the garage out to make some room for when I start repairing said bulkhead.
So I took the wheels off the axles to save some room.
As some of you will probably know, alloy wheels don't fit on 10spline front axles without modification. I.E spacers.
Well... this was his 'spacer'
F*cking washers!
I f*cking hate bodging c*nts.

And then on one of the wheels he had hacked the middle away in an attempt to get them to fit.
This is something I've heard done before, but washers is a new one on me.

Looks like the previous owners liked a bit of bodging,
Bodging is my pet hate,I mean what's the point I'd doesn't solve anything long term.

Exactly. I think he was an expert bodger and good at hiding it too.

A bit worrying to think of the forces acting on a handful of washers, I'm surprised it worked - I would have expected the wheel to crack around them.

Exactly  It won't be going back together like that that's for sure.

hi aaron, did this yesterday while i wuz bored lol.

Bloody show off :p :D
Does look good though. Can't wait to start having all my stuff done :)
Have you tried to get the fill/drain plugs out yet?

Drain plug was out, but forgot the fill plug, doh,.think I'll try the brute force and ignorance method, lol., nah iam gonna try some acid first and plasticine.

Well to kind of carry on from the above, I'm a little stuck in limbo at the mo, I've a week off work with little going on. It's all fell at the wrong time really, could have done with it off in another month.
I've no bits blasted so can't take for galv, would prefer the bulkhead blasted before I start repairing (but hopefully that is going this afternoon :D)
I'm still trying to source a disc rear axle and possibly a front as mine probably want's more work than a decent axle would cost, but we'll see what comes up and quite possibly just end up rebuilding my own.

The chassis, well one thing I have decided is that I'll be buying new.
But have I rang 'em yet? Have I chuff! It takes me weeks to actually ring people as I don't like dealing with them
Although theirs no rush and I want to see how long the other stuff is going to take me first.
I guess I should start thinking about what to do with the old chassis, seems a shame to scrap it, but will no doubt start getting ear ache about it soon
It may end up on the dreaded ebay like the last one did, but we'll see how I feel at the time as I shouldn't really.

Ah, opps... Thought you might have left them in to leave the threads clean once removed. Hopefully it's not too painful getting them out.

first dibs on the chassis if you decide to sell cocker ;)

It's yours if you want it :) You know where I am bud, come and have a look and see what you think, it's definitely got to go, it's just a mater of when.
