RAC did well for me today, called them at 8.50 arrived at 9.50 as promised. Booked a flatbed for 4.30 (when I finish work) it arrived 4.20. What more can you ask for apart from the £90 odd pound membership fee?

I was with the RAC when i had a Maverick 2.7td, was towing the caravan in wales and the head gasket went so i phoned the RAC, they would`nt take me home so they towed the car and the caravan to the caravan site, he phoned another RAC truck out to tow the van, then i had to get father in law to come out in his LR v8 with a trailer to get the MAV home then me caravan.

Im with greenflag now tenner a month by DD for the recovery plus option
only had to phone them once when the key fob bust but they fixed it, and stuck me a gallon of diesel in.

RAC or green flag are best for 4x4 and caravan owners everyday of the week. Brittania are also not too bad. If you have an accident and you are a member of the AA they will bill you for the recovery cost as it can be claimed back via your insurance company. (expensive if you are a long way from home)

Incidently as of June this year the government brought out a new law for breakdown and recovery vehicles over the weight of 3500kg. They are now limited to a radius of 62 miles (100km) from their depot unless they run on tachographs. (hardly any are on tachographs). This means that you are likely to get relayed from motorway services to motorway services if you are miles from home. Fine in quiet times but not good in peak times when you have to wait 2+ hours for each truck and spend only an hour in said vehicle before getting turfed out until the next one arrives. If you don't have breakdown cover that means another £100 + vat callout every 62 miles plus mileage at around £1 per mile each way.
ouch!!!!

Thanks Blair..........BE WARNED.

we, as north wales premier recovery company do just that but, as rightly pointed out will take you & your broke car either to another recovery company's depot at the edge of our 100km limit or to the nearest services BUT! as soon as i ring in to say i cant fix it or if the member has been accurate with the problem ie, cambelt or HGF or whatever has terminally disabled it then we will ring greenflag and arrange for another recovery truck to be there when we arrive.
longest i've had to wait is 10mins cos of traffic!

It's about time though. None of the guys who have rescued me in the past (not ALWAYS Landies - in fact it's usually the Sherpa bus) has been on tacho (why bother - they were exempt) and I have been known to get quite nervous as I desperately tried to keep them awake while they wavered around across the motorway. Example of how it works - AA once sent me a (sensible) garage guy in rural Northumberland. He had been up all day, but they wanted him to drive back to Carlisle, pick up his low-loader, come back to me, then drive me to South London, then drive home. Luckily he refused, and insisted they send an AA truck to meet us on the way. They then had to transfer me to another truck half way, probably because AA DO use the tacho.

Me caravan weighs a ton but how much does a 2.5TDI ES weigh?

It is the weight of the vehicle that recovers you and not the weight of the vehicle that has broken down that matters. If the recovery vehicle (and if applicable trailer combination e.g. service van towing a car on a dolly or pulling a caravan) weigh 3500kgs or over a tachograph must be fitted if the vehicle wishes to extend past the 62 mile boundary.

I get my AA cover with my bank account (lloyds tsb) just call them up with your account number, tell them the car you're in and where you are and they come out, never had to wait for too long, never had a problem:)

maybe this will help a little!!!! LoL:cool:

Tried both and now been with Britannia for several years and several vehicles. - When their agent turns up, you invariably find that they are also agents for AA & RAC, so you actually get the same folks (unless you get one of the ever-diminishing actual RAC or AA ones of course - but the years I was in both of them I only ever got agents). I've found Britannia to be cheaper and I've only need them once for my Landy (110) and they turned up with a vehicle more than capable of lifting it. - In fact, as it was in the early hours the owner of the agent garage brought *his own* car and lent it to me to go home in! Now thats what I call service!

Ive been an AA member for years and probably use them at least twice a year, never had a problem.I was towing our micra home with the landy when the alternator went tits up,called the AA,they were there fast, fixed the landy and the micra there and then!Thats what i call service.

all ours are with britannia, could nto fault them when we had an accident last year. only problem was that they sent a lowloader thingy that wasnt low enough to get the caravan on.

A.A. for me i had my landrover for a week and my fan belt snapped on a cold and wet december week last year
the man put a new steering pump belt and a new fan belt on first class service

I could be wrong but don't the AA cover the driver, so if you've got more than 1 vehicle your cover is for all of them. Whereas the RAC cover the vehicle, so if you have more than one person that drives it, your all covered.
