hi all I will start by saying I have done a search for the answer but I am really struggling to get an answer.. I am buying my dad new tyres for his disco 2 . it is on 255 55 18 and looking to put on some a/t maybe something like a general grabber. I would like to take tyre slightly bigger from a 55 profile. but I don't know how big the disco 2 will allow without any fouling. (maybe a inch or two will be enough, just make it stand out a little bit more). it isn't used for off roading 95 % road and 5% on fields with a trailer of wood... any help I could get would be great. also may I add it is a es premium model so has the mud flaps and side rails, I don't know if it would make any difference on tyre clearance.. thanks for you time :)

Hey Tom, good on you for helping your Dad out.

Firstly, it has to be said that there is less choice of tyres in 18in than 16in so that will limit your options a bit. If your Dad rarely goes offroad then unless you want the 'look' I'd go with a road bias tyre - it'll be quieter, more economical and possibly cheaper.

Size wise, the std tyre is 255/55x18 which is 29in diameter. I've run 255/70x16 tyres which are 30in with std suspension and I ran 265/75x16 tyres for a short while on std suspension. Those are 31.6in diameter but to be honest I think they're too big to run safely without a lift. I'd recommend a 30in tyre for your Dad - it makes the speedo spot on, looks the part being slightly larger than std and it should help make the ride slightly more supple.

Therefore, if I'm pushed to make a suggestion I'd go for 255/60x18. Theres a decent choice at Camskills - SUV Tyres - 4x4 Tyres - All Terrain Tyres - Off Road Tyres - 18" R18" - 255/60/18, 255/60R18 . Pirelli Scorpion ATRs are good, as are GG ATs, and Goodyear Wrangler HPs.

I'm rolling 255 70 16 Hankook Dynapro ATM's. I've found them, so far to be as quiet on the road as the General Grabbers I had on before, good grip and they fill the arches well. Would recommend, they were also a lot lot cheaper than Grabbers. I got them delivered from Camskill for £80 a tyre inc delivery. Then local fitter to fit.
