Hi All,
I just thought I'd pop back into here after buying a Disco 3 and starting the usual fixes and maintenance stuff. (Ducks to avoid the rotten tomatoes and eggs).
When I was towing my large caravan I started to notice a 'shudder' from the transmission when pulling away, almost as though there weren't enough revs being applied. There is an easy fix for this which I've applied and have no more issues.

I then remembered having a similar issue with my Freelander TD4 Auto when cruising along at 30 or 50 and ascending a hill, the transmission would sometimes shudder in the same way. I wonder if the same fix I applied to the Disco would apply to the Freelander.

There is a brilliant product called 'Dr Trannys Shudder Fix' (I kid you not). Basically, its a 54ml tube of 'friction modifier' that you add to the gearbox oil. This stuff is brilliant and it works instantly. Of course, it is a temporary measure that reportedly lasts about 10,000ks but none the less at a tenner a tube its cheaper than a new Torque Converter.

I have no idea whether this would work in a Freelander, but I thought I'd pass on this tip.

Best Wishes,
P

Forté Automatic Transmission Treatment will provide the following performance benefits to automatic transmission fluids used in a variety of automotive and off-road equipment:

  • Smoother operation and gear changing
  • Reduce harsh take up and flaring
  • Maintain fluid efficiency over a wide temperature range
  • Prevent wear and extend the life of the transmission unit
  • Prevent leaks by maintaining seal condition
Forté Automatic Transmission Treatment is compatible with and will enhance the performance of all automatic transmission gearboxes.

Forté Automatic Transmission Treatment will also enhance the performance of fluids recommended for use in Continuously Variable Transmissions.

Forté Automatic Transmission Treatment is the recommended treatment for hydraulic systems using LHM fluid, such as Citroën - particularly for conditioning the rubber seal between the hydraulic fluid pipe and gas globe.

Forté Automatic Transmission Treatment is also compatible with crankcase oils and can be used to treat manual gearboxes filled with crankcase oil to overcome 'notchy' gear change

give this a try ive used this in my auto td4

Dr Tranny (and all these others) along with a flush will rejuvenate a juddering box but within 30,000 it will be back, at which point it's new Torque Converter time. For your D3, Bristol Transmissions are the cheapest around. I'm going to be doing my D3 (a ZF 6HP26 box) in the spring as I'm starting to get some slip back in mine 20,000 miles after the last flush and Dr Tranny application.

It's blooming good stuff for the money!
