I know you may all find it amusing but I dont know so ill ask :)

Is there a differnece between a suspension lift and a body lift or are they the same thing with different names ?

Suspension lift will lift the suspension and vehicle as a whole and raise the centre of gravity

Body lift will lift body only from its original mounts and leave centre of gravity where it is

Well, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask! As far as I know, with a body lift, you do just that, and retain the original suspension. Ok for fitting bigger tyres but you're limited to 2 or 3 inches lift I think. With a suspension lift you change the suspension - bigger springs and shocks.
That's as far as I know! I've never done any of it so I could be wrong!:D

So there are two different ways then :)

I only ask as im after more tyre clearance (mainly on the rear) but on a budget as im only new to offroading so dont want to get spending loads on suspension, bushes etc

The only trouble is that I use it to tow and I get the feeling my tow hitch is already too high

Lifting the body only will also raise the centre of gravity as you are moving weight up same as fitting a heavy roof box will raise centre of gravity

It will raise the centre of gravity to an extent but not as much as a suspension lift as the frame, engine etc will stay at the ame height from the ground that they were originally.

If your looking for a cheap option then you could look at suspension spacers or body lift, both will allow you to fit bigger tyres and get more clearance. Without the tyres neither will give you extra clearance under your diffs.

I guess thats what im after then as ground clearance is not really an issue due to my great lack of time offroading and the fact I want to keep the towbar, dont want to spend loads, dont want to have to change bushes etc - its more just the wheel clearance.

Whats the difference between suspension spacers and body lifts ?

The general consensus seems to be, if you need to do a bodylift or suspension lift to fit tyres, then they're too big. Especially if there's no off road use planned. From the above question, I'm guessing you don't know what suspension spacers are? They're blocks which go under the springs, thus the wheels are 2" further away from everything except the unsprung components of the suspension system, thus giving more (vertical) clearance. A body lift is spacers between the body and chassis. What with the arches being part of the body, the clearance is provided here.

There's still clearance issues at the horizontal (ie front/rear of arches and front bumper).

Dare I ask - what tyres did you have in mind?

Ahhhhh - I think the clearance that I need is the front and rear edges of the rear arch and the rear edge of the front arch.

Its less what tyres I have in mind and more what I have lol. When I brought it there were massive road tyres on it that rubbed on lock alot so a friend gave me some steel wheels with part worn Annacondas on them

Its worth looking closely at the car to find out where its rubbing.

What size are the tyres?

when you lift the body you have to think about such things as the radiator that are mounted on the chassis, steering column even perhaps hoses. when lifting the suspension its things like nbrake pipes, shock absorbers etc, just my opinion get rid of your oversized tyres and go back to a standard size, do a couple of searches and all the info is here.

Ahhh forgot to consider all that - im not use to seperate chassis vehicles

Tyres are 235 85 16 114K

Lifting the suspesnion is probably THE most common mod to allow you to get larger tyres under the arches, which in turn gives you a little more under the diffs, a worth while mod on any Disco and makes a huge difference when offroad........but the issue is you have to consider the "other" bits when doing it, ie shocks, bumpstops brake lines , ABS wires etc.

If you werent so far away I have a set of 235/70 r16 insa muds you could have tried which are standard disco size. currently running mine on road tyres as it hasnt been off road for a couple of months now

Thats a very kind offer sir :5bcheers2:

How much extra space does the 70 allow over what I have now ?

the 235/70r16 sidewall is about 29" diameter and 235/85r16 is roughly 32" diameter so will give near enough 3" overall but you will lose 1.5" diff clearance. would also lower the disco 1.5" for towing purposes :)
