In the eye doc guy for a checkup and picked up Autoweek (August 11 2008) and it said:

The first Land Rover was not simply inspired by a Jeep, it was a Jeep, underneath.

Of course, had they really known their vihicle history, they would not have capitalized jeep, as they were referring to WW2 jeeps, which were not made by anyone claiming trademark to the word jeep, nor by anyone who ever would. Presumably, they were talking about Ford or Willys MB, but it could have possibly been, while very unlikely, an MA made by Bantam, Ford, or Willys.

The story goes on to say how Maurice Wilks had an old war jeep on his farm, but it wore out. So he wanted to make his own version. Teh article claims he sent someone to the dump to buy "two Army Willys Jeeps." It's unlikely he knew, noticed or cared if they were Willys or Fords, since the two were built to the Willys specification. Wilks built the prototypes with a Rover 48 HP 1.4L engine and a single centered seat, to appeal to farmer, and make export easy.

PM an e-mail to me if your would like to see a copy.

I will now shut up and don my flame suit
