hI AGAIN, ANYONE GOT AN IDEA ON COLD START UP OF TD5 ES AUTO, FULL SERVICE 2001,GET BLUE/WHITE SMOKE JUST FOR FEW SECONDS ENGINE CHUGS A BIT AND CLEARS AFTER A LITTLE REVING, NO SMOKE AT ALL WHEN WARM AND PUSHED HARD. IS IT COMMON? I KNOW DIESELS SMOKE A BIT WHEN COLD BUT WAS TOLD POSSIBLE PISTON RINGS? HELP

i would ask the wizard you know he will probablly have a better answer than the last reply you got,as for not being fixable when worn thats debatable there are plenty of guys on here with high milage td5s ,looked after well they will give good service, but some will run till it breaks without services at the correct times then slate the engine,as for the tdi i have had a couple both where spot on with little trouble but agian look on this site at how many have had problems with there tdi,put them side by side i know i would rather be sat in the td5 ,i have just driven my old 300tdi disco wich my dad now owns for about 10 miles ,the td5 is miles better ,enjoy it

Jim has it right to be honest, awful engine, sell it quick.. in 10 years time 300tdi's will still be rolling about on farms etc, TD5's will not.

Its about having an engine you can fix at the side of the road by, an engine you dont need to rely in oil soaked electrickery to work...

If your doing the school run, and want to take it to the stealer every 6 months then sure TD5's are fine, but there are many people who want to tinker in their garage rather than go to the stealer.

However the bluewhite smoke on start is likly to be caused by the engine being cold and if it does go quickly should not be a problem.

i think it means you may have just chosen the new pope

Thanks all,is the engine worn at only 61000 miles and full service history I wouldt think so (just worn in maybe) I couldn`t sell her seem to have fallen bib time for it (and its costs when broke) There does seem to be an us and them feeling on this site (TDi and TD5)but all good intentions felt and recieved with thanks

Could be your EGR sticking open (see other threads),very much doubt it being anything to worry about. The "us and them" thing is that your common all garden tdi owner that does all his own mechanics is scared ****less:eek:  by TD5's and all there computer wizardry, me included;)

There is no doubt that a TDi is more DIY friendly than a TD5 but in a way its just progress (not sticking up for progress, just making the point). In 10 years time will we all be sticking with our 'old' TD5's and resisting those new fangled Discovery 3's with their scary diesel V6, which probably makes the TD5 seem simple!

I also run a Golf TDI and my neighbour a Mondeo TDCi, both of which need diagnostic equipment to fix, so the TD5 is no different in that respect.

Totaly agree with you Mantamad, had a V6 tdi audi, wifes got a New beetle, both of which you need a stealer every time you get an air bag, abs, esp & fù*k know's what warning light on yeh dash which 9 times out of 10 is bollox!!Had enough that's why I got myself a 300 tdi, steering wheels on the wrong side but I'm happy-would love a TD5 though:D

I own a 300tdi and work on both. If you have changed a TD5 head you will know why I don't like working on them much. Both engines will crack their heads when overheated, but on a TD5 it costs a lot more, about a kidney's worth. We are now seeing TD5's with high mileages and they seem to last well (if the oil pump doesn't fall off).

And apparently you can't or shouldn't grind a TD5 crank.
