Purchased an 02 110 TD5 couple of weeks ago, bought on a whim.

The surprise is it has turned out to be the only vehicle I've driven in the past couple of years that doesn't spark up my sciatica, and that includes new RR Vogues and Sports, and all manor of so called luxury vehicles. Usually within 15 minutes of driving I'm in agony, not so with the 110...

I am planning to go over to using a Defender as full time transport, the 02 is ok but a little tired. My options are to either buy a late TD5 110 or a brand new TD4 110. Test drove a 110 xs TD4 utility today which I liked, but I am concerned about some of the negative comments i've read on the various Landrover websites concerning the new model.

I can buy the TD4 for a good price and can reclaim the VAT...

I had made the decision today to buy the new model until trawling the net tonight, now I'm not so sure....

Any and all advice greatly appreciated...:)

I would look for a tidy TD5 - all the TD5 problems are out in the open now, oil in ECU wiring, earlier ones had the dodgy head etc...

The new one is a transit engine, the gearbox is also iffy and the clutch has issues.

They MIGHT get it right soon and will release updates and sort the engine, clutch and gearbox issues. Then it may be quite a good machine. Or LR will go the way they went before the TDI engines came out after the release of the TD - that was a bad time for LR with that ****ty engine and caused them a lot of greif, a lot of people went to slittys but they won back the customers after the slittys rusted into a heap and LR got their act together with the TDI engines.

Thanks for the couple of answers, but after having the 02 110 TD5 recovered today , sump full of diesel, have decided to dispose of this and buy neither.
There seems to be to many problems with both engines. I don't mind mechanical work, but prefer not to have to listen to every knock and rattle, in anticipation of something going bang...

A short lived, but none the less interesting Defender ownership. Good luck to all you guys who are loyal to the mark, not sure LR deserve you....

Wishing you all a great weekend....

before you kick it into touch it may just be it needs 10 pence worth of copper injector washer replacing or fitting correctly. TD5's aren't the only engine that will do this. Any engine that the injector doesn't seal properly on will do the same.

Don't listen to him, your engine has a terminal problem and the motor is only fit for scrap.

However as your story has touched me somewhat I'm willing to offer you £500 and I'll take the landy off your hands, let me know when you want it picking up.

:D
