My a frame ball joint has failed the MOT.

However it has a SLU boge. Can I remove the boge and just fit a standard a frame ball joint and carrier?

Can't be bothered to press out the ball joint.

Will it drive ok without it?

WOW just logged on to find out the exact same thing!

If I remember rightly from past posts you will require heavy duty springs to be fitted at the rear which will also result in a 2" lift of the tailgate.

However I would like to have this confirmed and understand if it is simply just the springs that require changing to heavy duty or the shocks too?

Also do I need to uprated the front suspension also to maintain good road holding as I don't want to upset the current road holding?

Thanks in advance.

Just changed mine at the wkend make sure you have got loads of gas in your blowtorch.

Did you not change the springs?

Is it not now a little bouncy and sagging at the rear?

Could you put together a 'how to' for how you completed this task?

Is the boge unit preloaded ie in compression when fitted? Or is it simply a case of un-bolting the unit and discarding?

Thanks

I assume you didn't have the Boge Self Levelling Unit fitted then? It was used on early 110s but was, I believe, very quickly phased out. It used to sit above the fulcrum or thereabouts and seemed to serve no purpose

No just a straight forward a frame joint.

So is the boge under pressure. Or is it like a shock?

Will I have to lift up the body to release the pressure from the boge?

Couldn't undo the 45mm nut from the fulcrum, so took the boge out completely. Mine didn't have hardly any pressure at all. In fact, not really sure what it was doing apart from adding weight.

Getting a standard frame joint and chucking the boge out.

Right, firstly I removed my knackered BOGE self levelling unit today and replace the fulcrum assembly, fitted new Monroe dampers and heavy duty springs. Retained standard ride height as the Landy is mainly used for towing rather than off any off-roading.

Secondly, if only I new that the Boge unit was held in situe with bolts and not studs which I thought to be the case. After an hour and a half trying to grind the nuts off due to working in a confined space I then realise that they were bolts and that the remaining bolt was removed in 5 mins.

Oh well lesson learned! Job now done and really happy with the results. No more thud when I hit potholes of go over sleeping policemen. The rear is riding a little higher than before due to the heavy duty springs but no doubt they will sag a little in time.

Next job front springs, dampers, polybushes & new steering box followed by a full steam clean and Waxoyl. Roll on the summer!:clap2:

don't swop the joint... all u need to do is remove it, cut off the boge 'bracket' ..... angle grind it smooth, paint n refit your original... why buy new if yours is serviceable?

cheers steve

The Boge unit is effectively a self pressurising air spring , with a built in limiter . It was fitted to range rovers , and mostly 110 csw .
It allows a softer spring to be fitted at rear for unloaded/partload running , and then when fully loaded the boge unit stiffens the rear . If you just remove it the rear end will sag when heavily loaded.
It was removed by land-rover as a cost saving measure, going for a cheaper variable rate spring , it is noticeable when they did it as 110 started driving with the tail end up in the air . The range rover had migrated to air suspension. Dont try dismantling .
IIRC there was a guy looking at remanufacturing , on one of the Landy forums . When working they are very effective , when not they dont do anything other than use up part of your gross weight.
If the locating ball joint is u/s then it can be replaced , and the modification springs can take the place of the Boge unit . HTSH
