Hello,

My Disco 1996 300tdi A-frame ball joint seems ok but I just noticed that the boot is split in many places.

Does anyone know if it is possible to easily replace the boot and if so how to do it ?

I can buy the boot separate, so I assume its replaceable ? But I don't want to have to remove the ball joint using a press etc.

Just take the taper end off ball joint out of axel. No need to remove completly. And if the nut is tight enough to break the taper out of its place or won't tighten up again. Put a bottle jack onit and push it in untill joint don't spin either on or off

5 minutes!!!!! that put a smile on my face, if you know land rovers pick a time add 3hrs and then double that.
Good luck there an arse to remove!!! :)

when putting the ball joint back in Put a trolley jack under the front of the REAR diff and jack up this will allow it slot in.

Beat mine with a lump hammer and fork tool- unbolted it and pressed the bastard out

think RK missed the AFRAME bit :) any other boll joint, yes, but that one.....

By the time you have finished cursing and swearing at it, Id replace the joint and bushes while your at it.

No not missed the a frame bit he wants to replace the boot.. Not the whole joint. What's difficult about one nut?

+1 on that. Took me two bloody days just to do my balljoint cos the bastard thing wouldn't come out
Just did mine and it took 2 days - I sprayed the long bolts with penetrating spray for 2 weeks every other day and they would not budge - the ball joint nut was easy - In the end I had to grind through the actual fulcrum bracket ( luckily with a 5" lift its more accessible, still a bitch though) as I also couldn't budge the A frame arm bolts - not a nice job -so next day down to Craddocks £60 for new fulcum with ball joint and x2 new long bolts with nuts ---- copper slip everywhere --- SO YEAH GOOD LUCK
p.s I'd say if your gator/boot is no good your ball joint will be the same

Rust wasn't even the problem with mine. I got the fulcrum bolts out ok, used a scaffy pole on the balljoint nut and finally got that off. It was the fact that the balljoint hadn't been touched in 26 years and had been properly hammered into the axle mount which made it nigh on impossible to shift. No rust on it when I finally hammered it out

My hammers huge ;).

But remember, its not the size of the tool its the person using it

In all cases but this one ill agree. Biggest hammer always wins :p

How to use a hammer properly Was beaten into me before I learn how to use any other tools. Hit it hard once rather than lots of taps

(I'm not suggesting anyone doesn't no how to use a hammer)

Ok thanks for the advice guys. No rust on mine. You are right, I probably will replace the whole joint. They seem to average about Aus $70 by time I include freight from UK. I might get an adjustable one even!
