Doing the rounds on my G reg defender and looking for some advise on a few things:

1) front callipers need replaced. VIN of car is ...FA41####. Parts list shows "to (A)22L", "to (A)23L" or "from HA". where does my VIN fit in?!

2) Car had had a paint job at some point, but the colour coat is flaking off (see photos below). There is no paint code on the VIN plate. Any ideas if this 'green' looks like the same 'green' as would have been original? If so, any ideas on paint code? I'm hoping to spray locally to cover up where the paint has come off as it looks terrible. Where there is corrosion, like the bulk head, i'll sand back and apply with primer.

3) I found one of these alloy radiator plugs in the cab. Why do people buy these? Do they improve upon the standard plugs?

4) Passenger side, i know the vent onto of the bonnet is for the heater box, but what is the one on the side for?

5) The air cleaner box has a hole in it (see photo). Is that supposed to be there? If not, any idea what it would have been made for?

1) From (A) 23... - (V) HA...
2) Original paint code was probably LRC 419 ( Eastnor Green ), your paint looks a bit darker than this, but it's difficult to tell from a photo!
3) Makes you go faster.
4) Heater box for LHD vehicles.
5) That looks like the air intake to the filter box. There should be a short bit of pipe where that hole is and some flexi-pipe would then go to the NS wing air intake vent. No idea why it's been removed, do you have a 200tdi conversion? If so, it will have something to do with this, as the placement of the air filter box is a bit tricky with the 200 in.

Thanks.

for question 4, i meant the side of the wing, rather than the top of the wing. The vent at the top of the wing is for the heater box, but any ideas about the one on the side of the wing (passenger side). Is that the air intake vent for the filter box?

In relation to the filter box. It was a 2.5NA and had a 300tdi conversion, so maybe something to do with that. I've had a look at the parts cat. but can't see any ducting coming from the side of the filter box....

As for the bulkhead, it is probably rusting from the inside out and no amount of rubbing down, priming and painting will stop the rust. You should at the very least fill up the bulkhead with dinitrol or similar through door pillar.

The side vent is the air intake vent.

The large pipe on the right of this assembly connects to the vent via some flexi pipe.
Your current setup is not the end of the world, but I'd look into getting it put right.
The 300tdi had it's intake vent on the OS, but you're better off connecting to the existing one on the NS.

Number three is an alloy/aluminium rad plug which are usually made of plastic and get brittle after a while and it isn't uncommon for them to break or get rounded off. There's one on the top right of the rad and one on the thermostat housing

Doesn't sound good RE bulkhead! I'll get a look at that. How do you access through the door pillar? Are there holes, or is it via door hinges when removed? (too dark to go have a look just now)

I guess it would make sense to utilise the intake on the nearside. Just requires a longer hose to bring it over to the other side.

Good shout RE the axle. Though i think it was only the back that was changed to get disks. Any obvious way to check if i can't find a number printed on it?

Stick a picture up but the drive members look different
Plus the rear bracket would need tweaking to allow you to fit an 'unmodified' air filter housing
