95 starter not cranking (auto, gas)

I've read through some of the other threads on this topic and they were helpful in narrowing this down...but I need some quick tips to try and solve this before resorting to the highway robbers for a tow!
No starting problems up to this point as far as I am aware (at least for the last year or so that I have been driving it) but today after parking for about 15 minutes, it wouldn't start. Power is still there and lights are bright but there's a click and that's it. No hit, no crank, just nothing.

Some people indicate that they have a similar problem with their immobiliser malfunctioning. Lately 3 out of four locks have to be pulled up manually to open the door from the inside, it's impossible from the outside. Driver's side has to be turned with the key at the same time the handle is pulled, from inside and outside. The fob works fine but the locks don't come up high enough to disengage. Could this be immobilising the engine somehow?

Basically I had to leave the poor thing alone at the side of the street in a strange neighbourhood tonight and I'm heading back tomorrow with a hammer to take my frustration out on the starter (kidding!! just love taps) but that leads to my second (and silly question). Where can I find the starter? This was originally a right hand drive converted to left if that makes any difference. I've searched high and low for manuals and diagrams but I'm having no luck finding anything useful.

If anyone has tips, tricks, ideas, and so on, I would really appreciate it! I really need to get it home and then I can troubleshoot further but help me get it going if it's possible!

starter should be underneath, close to catalyser on exhaust system. Dia is best I could find. Sounds like a loose terminal and is the easiest and best option to start with.
Doors locking - usually happens on our older disco's - the latch mechanism gets worn or excessively dirty and the mechanism doesn't operate correctly - just as you described. Search ebay uk on Discovery door latch springs, there's a guy there that sells them for a few pounds. Seesm to do the trick but is a pig of a job to do on side doors!!!!!!!!!!!! Mine still has the passenger door with this problem but I cured the tailgate.

By the way - your battery is ok and the terminals not corroded or loose???

Have you cleaned the engine earth straps? If not they should be due.
As a test connect a jump lead from the battery earth terminal to a bolt on the engine and try and start it. If it starts, clean earth straps if it doesn't check starter brushes.
Some people fit an additional earth strap to the engine from the battery just to be sure.

Well, I located the starter but the hammer didn't work! Too bad... .I guess it was too much to hope for a simple ending. I have towed it home so I can mess around at my leisure. Thanks for your replies. I have been dreading starting the lock project because I know it will be a nightmare!

if its an auto are you sure its nothing to do with the inhibitor switch? if its a manual first check your earths are ok then check the small wire connection on your starter and if its none of these it sounds like the brushes are fooked in the starter!
