This is a general question...hopefully I will get a 300Tdi very soon but doing less than 5k per year what would be peoples opinions on a 2.0 petrol ??

Cheers

there is no advantage to a 2l petrol, they dont have enough power to pull the weight of a disco and use loads of fuel because of it.

Only a viable option if it had an LPG conversion, personally I'd not bother with one at all.

Not even then really... even less powerful and LPG has hiked pricewise compared with diesel so not really all that economical when it comes down to £££'s paid at the pump for miles driven.

Why not enough power? 136bhp for 2.0 vs 111bhp for Tdi. I have driven an Mpi loads of times both on and off road and I found them to be very good. The main difference is in how you drive them. If people drive it the way you drive a diesel, then it will feel sluggish. The 2.0 T series engine in the Mpi is an engine that likes to be revved. Above 3500 rpm and the engine really pulls well all the way to 6000 rpm. when off road, I have found very little difference between the Mpi and the Tdi. While the Tdi has more torque, the Mpi has a much better throttle response and it is quite a lot lighter than the Tdi I have never found the Mpi to be lacking power when off off road at all. The only time I would say there is any really big difference between the two engines is when you are towing anything over 2.5 tons. In this case the Tdi will pull away from a standstill quicker and easier than the Mpi. The 1 big disadvantage of the Mpi is it's fuel consumption. It is not much better at all than the V8, which is the engine I would choose if you can get one.

As you say yyou have to rev the balls off them to get anywhere? Which is usually a sign that the engine is underpowered for the vehicle it's been fitted in.

ford sierra cosworth properly tuned can pull 480/500bhp but then so do most std artic trucks. I'd like to see a cossie do the same work as a volvo tractor unit???

Always the TDi over the 2.0 Mpi but if you want petrol go for the V8 it's a cracking engine and certainly not short of power!
