Hi all...

I have a 94 3.9 V8 auto. She'll always start cold, but when I stoped at the petrol station today to fill up - she wouldn't start.

Had another go - she turned, started then died on me. This was the case for about another 2 or 3 goes. As not to block the pumps, I moved whiclst using left foot on brake and keeping the revs up so she wouldn't die on me.

Drove home the same. When I got home, I assumed that I had simply pulled some crap from the tank, and that after a run she'd clear - no chance.

Basicly - She will start warm, but not idle. Any ideas?

Jim

Right.. an update:

Dunno if this will help gig any ones brain cells:

She strats cold but when warm.. has trouble idleing.. hunts for a sec or two then dies. Sometimes she's ok.. usually if you start her warm, manage to keep her alive then give her a run. Strange!

I also have quite a lot of fumes via the heater.. quite a heavt smell of exhaust fumes when you clow down.. plus somtimes you get a very very slight backfire when allowing the engine to slow under the engine revs itself at about 1,800 rpm.

I also have a rumble.. or should I say a slight vibration almost like she's missing when going at say 50 at 1,800 rpm..

Are these linked in any way? where do I strat on this?

I have had some work done on the distributer advance mech a few month ago as it actually rusted solid and caused a backfire which stoped the car from re-starting.. since then its been fine untill now.. is this an old problem coming back

Any ideas or advice will be brill.. I'm at a loss.

thanks

As you say you had distributor problems Have you had the ignition timming checked, also have alook at the plugs and leads and check the distributor cap for cracks, also an easy way to see if leads are breaking down is to wait till its dark lift the bonnet then start and rev it alittle and you will see them light up.

Thanks Redrocky.. checked under the bonnet.. no lights.. so assume leads are ok. Caps ok too - I did notice a whisper of smoke from the Driverside manifold.. on right by the driver bulkhead.. can't tell if its coming from the nut or the manifild itself... could this be causing this much of a problem??
