I recently bought another 90 TD5 (sigh...) which apart from an annoying vibration, I'm very happy with. It's got a low mileage but was used by the previous owner for some offroading, accessing hilly land. It came with very big MT's and now I've changed them to AT's I've realised the MT's were hiding the vibration, being 'knobbly' on the road. The vibration starts at 18mph right up and feels like driving over a finely corrugated road. It seems worse and also gives off a whining noise under acceleration. I've recently had the Ashcroft transfer gears fitted and I assume Ashcrofts did their usual good job so I don't suspect the transfer box. With the t.box in neutral there is no vibration at all going up through the gears, so I feel it's definitely drivetrain related and it also does it freewheeling down my long drive with both boxes in neutral. When I bought the 90, it had a new front propshaft and two of the bolts on the front drive flange were damaged, indicating to me that the original propshaft had been terminally damaged. Was anything else damaged...? Yesterday I started to get a 'chinking' noise from the main gearbox (maybe) in neutral or in gear with the clutch depressed, during gearchanges at times. It drives okay otherwise. There's no play in the UJ's and no up & down play if the propshafts are pushed/pulled. I'm at a bit of a loss diagnosing these things and can only think of getting to the LR dealer (arrrgghhh!) to see if they can pinpoint it. It has new, good quality tyres. Any (sensible!!) ideas, unrelated to its colour (!!), welcome..
I wondered if the 'corrugated road' effect could be caused by a missing or broken tooth, maybe in the diff or main gearbox....

Just back from a spin without the front propshaft. A dream, all vibes and noises have gone. Shall I drive around like this for ever...? Hmmm, I suppose not. As the front propshaft is almost new, but not a LR part, it hardly seems replacing it, unless it's unbelievably out of balance. Like I can check it, right? Maybe the problem is that a bit of it is BLUE!!?? Do I check the diff. teeth (deep joy), or just bolt it on in a different place..??????

My postman says: 'The more dogs I meet, the more I like people...'

Maybe found the cause. Someone on the LRO forum suggested the UJ yokes may be misaligned and that a TD5 is different to previous models. Had a look and they seem not to be aligned conventionally. However, I can't find any info as to how they should be aligned on a TD5... Can anyone help?

Wassa bong? I can see where a 55 bus stops, though.

do you really not know what a bong is?????

Errm, have I led a sheltered life?? I say, is it the noise the butler makes on the dinner gong?? I vaguely remember what a bonk is. Does that help??

I've been trying for the last hour to find a photo of a Landy propshaft. Impossible.. Quicker to go the 32 miles to look under one in a showroom..

i got one off GOOGLE for ya

At last - problem solved.., maybe. It's because a bit of it was - BLUE!! I shall elucidate. After wiping off the gunge, I discovered it was a Hardy Spicer propshaft, cuz the sticker said so. It also had a type and a serial number. So I phoned Hardy Spicer and after speaking to the wrong factory 3 times and even the right factory man saying it was the wrong factory..., I discovered a) The propshaft I took off my TD5 was for a 300TDi and so was 20mm too short. b) The yokes should have a 45 degree offset for that model and TD5's. This is for the front, don't know about the rear.. A secondhand 90 TD5 in the dealership also had the 45 degree yoke offset. c) It was made by Hardy Spicer Hindustan, presumably by Hindu Stanley. He knew this as the splined bit is coated in BLUE Rilsan, not the brown as used by the UK plant.
As the price for a new one from H.S. was less than 50% of the price from LR, I ordered one, made in Leek.. I asked why it was vibrating, considering it was nearly new... It seems there is only 45mm movement allowed for on the propshaft so as it was 20mm too short to start with, that may have accounted for the noise.. All those with raised suspenders, please note! We'll see.. Happy daze... The man from Hardy Spicer, he say only use OE propshafts, as there's loads of crap about. He's telling me...

Are you sure your not getting over run because of the props?
When I had my extream kit fitted one of the propshafts was to small (hence over run). How tall were the other tyres?
