90 Pickup Passenger door repair or replace?

The passenger door on my 90 needs either replacing or major repair, the bottom of the frame seems fine but the top cross bar below the window is rotted and the skin is shot. I keep looking for good used but they all look worse than mine for silly money. The other option is strip off the skin, repair the frame and fit a new skin. The repair section is about £30 and a skin about £100 so seems like a no brainer, question is do I go with the original ally material or steel, I`m leaning towards ally to keep it all "original" but would like to hear opinions, cheers.
 
Personally I’d go with galvanised steel skins , I’m about to do both my front doors on my project 90 and that’s what I’ve gone for and you can’t tell the difference when fitted .
 
Is this the cross bar on the inside or outside of the door. My outside one is shot but the skin fine. Any idea if this can be replaced without taking the skin off?
 
If you’re on about the ones that run across the middle the inside one can be brought from YRM if the one were the locking peg fixes to SP4x4 sell those . The ones that run across the middle of the door skin you have to make yourself.
 
The top one on the outside that the rubber seal fits to (I think!). Like this one in the following image (not mine)

YRM METALS sell those got to replace those on both my doors . Do a search on google they’ll pop up they sell a lot of stuff like that .
 
Cheers Ian. I'll get one and see if I can do it! It's the passenger side do if it doesn't work it's the other half at risk. lol
 
No problem mate , if you’re in no rush I’ll be doing mine in the next month or so, I’ve got a build thread in the members vehicles section I’ll post some pics up , need to update it haven’t done it for a year :rolleyes: .
 
Not sure how true it is but I read that original door skins are any ally mix but the replacement skins are normal ally and very soft so will dent easily, not good when off roading. If that's correct then it looks like I will definitely be going for galvanised ones
 
Steel doors will still dent easily given how thin they are and are arguably harder to beat back out nicely and of course if you do scratch them through the galvanising then you'll have rust problems forever more.

If you do go down the ally route instead, then make sure you put some plastic sheeting or a definite continuous sealant layer between the frame and the skin to prevent the electrolytic corrosion.

I repaired the one's on the 90 and whilst it's easy enough given the time it took I've already decided the 110 is about to get new ally ones all round from S&P.
 
Think i`m leaning towards the Galv skins as there will be no reaction between frame and skin. I will have to strip off the old skin and check the condition of the frame, if its repairable then go from there.
 
I might be misunderstanding you but if you have galvanised skins and non-galvanised frame, are you sure there won't be a reaction? My understanding is that any dissimilar metals cause an electrolytic reaction so zinc and steel will still react unless they are isolated. You ideally need the frame to be galvanised as well (or a barrier like the plastic between them).

What I`m thinking of doing is have the frame blasted and carryout any repairs required then spray the frame with a product I think is called Galvon, I`ve used it on bare metal which has been outside for some years and no sign of rusting, I think its a type of spray on cold galvanising so will probably go with that plus seam sealer should do the trick
